Glad I Took Advice This Time

TomW in SouthJersey

>A couple weeks ago I posted about using a faceshield versus just safety glasses and received good advice to get a faceshield. Tonight a 7 inch oak bowl came off the lathe while it was spinning at a pretty good speed. It happened so fast I didn't even see what happened let alone time to duck. The bowl knocked my cheapo Home Depot faceshield half off after getting hit directly in front of my eyes. (I like my eyes)

I thank the group for the good advice and suggest to some other recent newbies to get a shield even if it is an inexpensive one. I have only ever used my glasses or safety glasses for regular woodworking. This is different.

>I caught a small chunk of pen after it bounced off my 12 yos face shield last night.

Today, his favorite teacher has a new pen and Gun is unhurt.

He is adamant about safety gear and I try to set a good example.

>Wisdom is knowledge you needed before you had it. Thankfully, folks who have learned by experience are so generous in sharing it here.

Al Stirt got me in the habit of the faceshield after he learned the hard way on a bowl that gave no clues it was about to come apart. Dave Lancaster had a similar experience. It just makes good since when you are turning bowls and vessels.

Glad you are okay. Jump back on that horse!
