Ice Storm and Hunting for wood

Ice Storm and Hunting for wood

Steve Roxberg

>Well we are having another big ice storm here in Kansas. I have the chainsaw in the back of the van so that I'm ready when a tree falls over.

So far I've only located what I would call a River Birch, one of the clumping trees. The trunk is about 12" across. Is this stuff any good to turn?

Ice Storm? I had the A/C on today.

TD

>I just got back from visiting some other turners in our club and had to run the A/C on the way home. I have't had a fire in the shop stove all week. Dress for the day is shorts and T shirts.

We'll pay later.

>Sorry the photo did not post , our server is not very fast and we loose the connection. This is our turning shop in a typical Amazonian rain.

>9" of ice wouldn't be fun. Roofs would collapse from the weight.

9" of rain equals about 72" of fluffy snow. Now that would be nice! (For skiing anyway! I'd have to hire someone to plow.)

Tony - Memphis

>In our office building. Threatened to fire it up at home to get the moisture out, but haven't yet. Darn close though! Out walking in tshirt and shorts...weird!

Jim, this begs the question...

>What IS the best time of year for my wife and I to visit you? For me, "best" is not too much rain, not too many bugs, and no searing heat (but I like it in the 90's)

>Mike: It only rains a couple of hours at a time, very rarely all day or all night. Very few bugs at anytime unlike you would think. If you like fishing the Peacock Bass fishing is best in Sept. and Oct. when the river is low. The river rises and falls 40 feet a year mainly due to the snow melt in the Andes. If you are not a fisherman every other month is the same.

>Steve,

The tree called River Birch here in the Northeast is a close kin to Yellow and Black Birch -- very desirable. Look for nice figure if there is any buttressing near the base of the tree, and check for sprouts around the base -- many Birch varieties form nice root burls.

>You don't want 9 inches of rain when it's freezing. A few years ago we had 2-3 inches of rain and it all froze. Trees were down every were and down trees mean no power for 6 days. Also down trees mean trees on my house, 5 trees to be exact. It took all summer to get things cleaned up.

Pray it don't freeze.

>Trust those of us that know. You DON'T want ice.

Snow is one thing, and liveable. Ice is a different animal entirely.

Thanks T.D...but....

Oops...woke up...still cold outside....oh well, there is always next year.

>Thanks for the offer Jim. You just never know...

A silly question...you are working with a lot of exotic woods there. Are there any problems you know of about getting finished products you make into other countries?

>Thanks Jim...that is what I figured but thought I would ask.

What city would one fly into to get easy connections to where you are. I looked at a map and Lima seems a long way away.
