Sycamore Carved Bowl

Ben Aragon

>I posted a bowl a couple of days ago and here is another bowl I turn last year. The vessel is Sycamore with a carved top. It is 6x5x1/8 thick. I turned the bowl green rough and soaked it in PEG for a week and then let it air dry for 4 weeks, then finished it. The finish is moisture cured polyurethane and bees wax. The photos dont lye, I noticed how rough the edges of the holes when I saw the close-up photo. I cleaned up the hole with a jeweler file, looks much cleaner now. Any comments are welcome.

Best Wishes,

Ben

>Ben this is beautiful, skillful work. The size of the piercings, and the amount of area they encompass fit wonderfully with the size and shape of the workpiece, something I'm guessing is the result of trial and error as much as good taste and judgement.

What tool are you using for the piercing? Very impressive work.

>Mike,

Thank you for the praise. The size of the carving was the result of some trial and error. Earlier bowls only had two or three circular burned lines around them. This I would do with a light cut from a skew and then a burning tool. The carving I did was with a Powercrafter, a demo was given at my local turning meeting and I had to get one. This is the first bowl I carved like this but I did do a lot of practicing carving on broken bowls. Yes I have broken quite few bowls this last year. The carving tool works best if the bowl is around 1/8 thick or less. I have also turned through the bottom of a few also.

Best Wishes,

Ben

>Very nice, Ben. The carving, the general proportions and the shape.

How did you lay out the pattern for piercing? Freehand as you went, or did you have a template?

>John,

Thank you, the carving was done free hand. I tried to make amoeba shaped holes without duplicating them. I would have to stop once in awhile and step back a little to see how it was coming. On my practice pieces I would start making the holes smaller or larger as I would go along. On this one I concentrated on keeping the concept uniform. Im glad you like it.

Ben

Beautiful!

>Ben,

This is really beautiful. I love it. I've really been fascinated with pierced turnings and this one is a lovely example. I love the wood, the form, the burning and the carving, the finish. A very beautiful piece!
