Great Deal: Flat Rate Priority Mail with USPS

Brad Vietje

>As you may have seen on other turning groups, the United States Postal Service is now offering flat rate priority mail at $ 7.70 for any weight up to 70 lbs., with some dimensional limits.

They offer two boxes that are 11"x8.5"x5.5" and 14"x12"x3.5". Anything up to 70 lbs. that will fit into these boxes without bulging the sides is fair game at $ 7.70 anywhere in the USA. Another option is any box that measures no more than 108" in length and distance around the widest part combined.

This is a great deal for anyone who wants to swap small and medium sized chunks of wood from around the country. This doesn't help out our friends outside the USA, but makes it truly affordable to trade or swap woods. Details are found at www.usps.com

Should we start a wood swapping group ? A few days ago Carol in Virginia lamented that she wanted to try making small bowls, but had no green practice wood available... now we can all send her a gift !

>Oooohhhhh! I like that idea! LOL But I will still have to learn to use my chain saw so I can reciproctae. :) Of course, I could just say "Come on to the farm, and we'll go burl hunting!"

Ab-sa-tively !

>Wood chunks are pretty heavy, but this low rate means people from all over the USA can share and/or swap woods. I don't know enough web technology to start a wood swappers list, but we could always post something here with a subject line like "Spalted Maple to Swap for Osage Orange", and deal with addresses, phone #'s and such in direct, off-list e-mails. We'd be limited to moderate-sized pieces in most cases, but that might still be a lot of fun.

BTW: I really do have spalted Sugar Maple and other woods, like Black Locust, Black Cherry and Eastern Hophornbeam to swap for O-O, if anyone is interested...

>Hey, sounds good to me! Earlier this summer, I had an entire tree of perfect ambrosia maple; after roughing out about 100 bowls over the course of a few weeks so the green wood wouldn't go to waste, I didn't even want to look at the stuff any more. Would have been eager to trade for a few pieces of something different.

Sorry Brad, no osage orange right now. If I come across a log soon, I'll let you know. I do have a few rounds of eastern red cedar (~7"dia x 2" thick) and a few more small logs of ambrosia maple (8 to 10" dia.). Not much of anything bigger that I haven't already roughed out.

Thanks,

Sam

Not All PO's Have Them

>ROFL! That's the response I expect from my PO. One of the things you gotta love about living in the sticks! :)

>I'll check this out with my local postmaster -- and I live in the sticks for sure (maybe even in the twigs !). In fact, I've gotten mail from 3 or 4 addresses ago because the postal people in these small towns know me, and my current postmistress (?) was one of my sister's best buddies in high school. My return address is "Vietje 05043", which is all it would take to get something to me by USPS, even though the postal reg.'s want a lot more info. Since there are exactly 8 Vietje's in the USA, and 5 of them are my immediate family, that's none too surprizing. Also, the local UPS driver lives 5 houses away, and is chair of our selectboard -- I sometimes get packages at night when he's on his way home in his car !

I'm not sure you are required to use the official boxes, (which you can get in batches of 25 for free from the USPS web site). I think any package that's up to 108" in length plus distance around widest part will do, but I need to check this out further. From my reading, you could mail a pair of skis to Alaska, or a box of wood to Presque Isle, Maine for $7.70...

>Barbara,

Look at the USPS website. You can order the boxes (they are free), and they will be delivered to you (also free).

I have O-O coming out my ears

Clem Wixted Jonesboro, AR

>E-mail me and we can work out something.

I came across a log about 12 feet long and about 24 inches or more in diameter last summer. The tree guy, whom I know, cut it up for me into approx 24 inch lengths. They have been seasoning since then, most covered and sitting on pallets. They are still as they were on the standing tree, not cut into turning blocks.

Do you think a 24 X 24 inch would fit into one of the USPS flat rate boxes? :-)
