>Kind of exciting. I married into a family with a lovely summer home in Rockland, Maine. Who knew that there was such as well esteemed woodworking school in the same town? I've known for a few years but now they're doing turning, too. There is also some world class striper fishing up there in the summer months.

If I recall correctly, one of our WC'rs is teaching, or has taught there.

This morning I sent in my registration to take Jacques Vessery's course "Turning, A Canvas of Good Form"

August 22 26

From the website: This investigation of the marriage between form and surface is for experienced turners who want to strengthen their creative and technical skills. Jacques guides participants to experiment with design elements such as proportion, scale, volume, texture, and color to explore the potential of the turned object as a canvas for surface enhancement.

Technical instruction covers use of the bowl gouge, hollowing, and sharpening, as well as carving and texturing processes using rotary carving, reciprocating carving, and burning tools. Jacques also shares his methods for coloring and finishing, including work with gold leaf and the use of acrylics to complement textured surfaces."

Should be a great summer trip to Maine! A week of turning with one of the best, a guided trip on a productive river, and lots of lobster. Maine gets better every year.

>Okay, I admit it. I'm jealous. I'm in Lubbock, Tx where the seafood is shipped in, and the distances are measured in hours and not miles. I've been to your part of the world a couple of times and I really want to go back, especially to the school your going to go to. The scenery is beautiful and the seafood is fresh. So go, have fun, learn a lot, share the info here with us, and try to feel a little guilty for all the good things you have.

>I raced a 1/2 Ironman there a few years back (1.2 mi swim, 56 mi bike, 13.1 mi run). It sucked! Was so hot I thought I was going to need medical attention. I'll never race there again, even though I'm trying to find a job in Austin....

>Mike, I vacation in Maine in a lobster fishing village called Stonington. It is a short distance by sea and a longer distance by land to Rockland. I visted Peter Korn there last summer and hope to enroll in his basic course in woodworking. It is a fabulous school and they were just installing the turning center as I was there. Jacques is an amazing turner and a real artist. His home is in Damariscotta just up the way from Rockland. While you are there, you need to make a point to visit Dave Lancaster whose shop is nearby. He does amazing production work with bowls and sells many through the Thos. Moser shop right outside of Portland. His method for coring out blanks is worth the trip. He's also just a great guy...typical Mainer.

Congratulations on your plans. I know that you will enjoy the time with Jacques.

Blessings,

David Galloway

>Things don't get much better. Can I come along and be the house boy?

I've used to have a special deal with Capt. Andy (up the road in Camden) I'd drop off an empty ice chest at the dock every morning and pick it up full every afternoon at 4:00. A lobster a day is good, but 2 or three a day is better.

>Hi Mike, Looks like you are coming to the "Promised Land"this summer. Welcome. You are going to like the class with Jack or Jacques as some call him. He's a friend of mine and a great guy, lives just down the road apiece from me.I assisted Mike Hosaluk at the Center last year and will assist Mike again this year as well as Al Stirt. The program over there is growing and will no doubt be as good as any available in a couple years.Look forward to meeting you when you come up this summer, come over to Damariscotta and maybe we can find a bit of old JUNK wood for you. Take care...Mac

>Striper's are running off the east coast of NC around Cape Hatteras and Oregon Inlet. My father has been giving me the fishing report. His brother, nephew, and him went last week and caught their limit in a matter of hours (2 fish 27" or better per day per person). he said that some friends of theirs brought back 130 lbs of fish in three striper last week. Fish stew!

Itching to go but Christmas and 8 hours travel time and SWMBO with the little one just doesn't equate to fishing time. Especially if I'm interested in any turning time also.

>Wife has been after me to visit Maine. I might be ready for such teaching in a year or two. For now I will just have to turn to you for such insight. Sounds like an awesome trip. I will be in Montauk late September, fishing only.
