>I'm thinking of upgrading my lathe (currently a Record DML24) and I've been considering a Record DSH36 with the swivelling head to allow increased bowl turning. Does anyone have one, or have any thoughts on the matter?

I can't really go to major leagues in terms of price as I'm a student, so no suggestions about a Oneway!! (Unless you're buying.....)

>Regan,

I have a Record Coronet, i don't know the number if it has one. It is ok for spindle work, but even with the attachment, is hard to do a good job on a bowl.

>Regan: The DML24 and the DSH36 are essentially the same machine. They both use the same cast iron parts. Record has a swivel headstock upgrade kit for the DML, but since there are no dealers in Canada (or the US ?) you would have to get the parts from England. I think the kit is 60 or 70 pounds sterling add shipping and taxes and the kit will cost as much as your DML24.

By The Way where are you planning to get the DSH36?

Given your limited funds situation your best bet might be to find a used Record CL1, or CL2, or CL3. Ask around at the turning clubs in southern Ontario.

>All In One tools seems to have bought out the remainder of Record's Canadian stock, I'll post the link below. You are right in that it certainly wouldn't be worth importing the parts from England (they quoted me 50 pounds for delivery).

Do you know of any turning clubs in Southern Ontario?

Thanks for your help!

>Regan:

The prices at Allinone look really good. It would almost be worth while to buy one of the lathes to put away for spare parts - not that you would need any parts - but a second toolrest for long spindles and a spare motor might be a good idea. Assuming one wants to keep the Record lathe for a long time. They do work really well, within their limits.

Ontario woodturning along with other woodworking clubs are listed here: (I hope this link works)
