>A turned rose, the blossom is holly, the stem is ebony, the cube is cherry burl. All elements of this piece are turned; the cube is turned on three axis points to form a cube, then hollowed and a threaded ebony insert is installed.

The stem is turned in a similar manner as a goblet, leaving a bulge in the center of the stem, which was later bandsawed to shape. The thorns are from my rose garden, which is in a sad state of neglect. The blossom is smaller than a quarter, to give a sense of scale.

mortise and tenon joints holds all components together.

>Hi Keith,

This is a really neat piece. I love the way you think out of the box. The stem coming through the cube ads a great dimension to the piece. Really very beautiful!

>Thanks David, I too am an avid gardener...at least I was, until the turning bug got to me. My poor rose garden, I can hardly bear to look at it in it's neglected condition, and my vege garden is choked with weeds.

Thankyou very much!

>Thanks, Garrett. This is a piece I have wanted to make for quite a while.

The rose is formed by turning a series of mini-forms, each identical in shape, in decreasing sizes. I combine elements from each turning to form a decreasing radius which forms the blossom, similar to making a segmented piece.

The blossom is so thin that the whole thing illuminates when a light is held up to it.

Thanks to all for the kind words!

>Man! That is so cool; I love it Keith. I've been toying with the idea of roses in wood, and you've pulled one off wonderfully. Keep it up.

>I saw the cube post first and then came upon this one. Fantastic! Your mind (and hands) work in mysterious ways Keith. You really are "branching" out into new territory in turning. This is an incredible piece of sculpture. Will we see this at Showcase?

Take care, Don
