Juried shows ?? redux

Dave Smith, Longview, WA

>I posted this question on the message board a few days ago. I thought I might get some more input here on the turning forum.

I received an invitation to participate in a juried woodturning show. First I would like to know if these people have any idea who I am or if they just used the shotgun method to find turners.

Does anyone know what method is usually used to invite people to a juried exhibit?

The only woodworking organization I belong to is the AAW which I joined a year ago. I suspect that is how I got on the list.

They request 35mm slides be submitted. I no longer have a working 35mm camera. I received some good information on how to make 35mm slides from the post on the message board.

Sandy has been jurying my work for years in Longview, WA.

I get invitations all the time. Not because they know me, I'm just on a list. I belong to Tennessee Association of Craft Artists and I think That's why I get on the lists. I don't do shows at the present time but since I photograph work for so many artists it's nice to keep up with the different regulations concerning slides for these shows.

>Dave, I don't know if this will help, but there are companies that will take your digital pictures and make slides. You can send them over the net to these companies. I have been using Color Slides with good results.

>Hi Dave, I recently got an invitation also. Is yours from the Lake Oswego Festival of the Arts (near Portland)? I'm not sure how they got my name either, except for my membership in AAW. I was also wondering whether it is a result of a shotgun. That doesn't do much for my ego, but with luck I'll get juried in. I also have the dillema of needing 'quality' slides of my work. Good luck!

Yes, Lake Oswego Festival of the Arts.

>I feel better that I was included in a list with you. I don't think I have anything I've made that would be called art. I have always strived to make better things than that.

I haven't decided if I want to be juried for the exhibit. I don't deal well with rejection. Will you be going to the event or sending your pieces. If you are going to drive you are welcome to make a stop in Longview. My shop is about 10 minutes off I-5.

Dave Smith

I am not an artist and I can prove it in Longview, WA.

>I don't know about anyone else, but, I usually ignore these printed invitations that arrive with a mailing label and reduced rate postage; and especially when this isn't the first one.

I will probably read it if someone took the time to write my address on it with a pen and use a 1st Class stamp.

I will definitely pay attention to one that arrives in an envelope with a personal note from the director, or someone else associated with the event.
