Spoiled a new turner today

Mike Schwing from Md.

>Rob Bourgeous, a frequenter here. Rob got in contact with me yesterday, he was in town visiting in-laws. We'd only met through this and another website, but as I've yet to meet a turner who wasn't a stand up person, I had him over as he asked for a lesson on the Ellsworth gouge. We gave his out of the bag Ellsworth a proper sharpening, and turned a nice little maple bowl, demonstrating to Rob all the cool things his new gouge can do. Rob catches on quick.

He's been properly spoiled now with exposure to a Powermatic and a Tormek. I did my job!

Sent him back down south with a trunk full of lumber, some shavings in his hair and hopefully a lot of knowledge I wish I could have been shown a short while back.

Was a pleasure to have ya over Rob.

>Nice Mike... he spends a bundle on a nice gouge and now he is going home to tell his wife he needs to spend more on a Powermatic Lathe and a Tormec system.... HOME WRECKER...

That's why I am not coming over to visit... SWMBO says the lathe I have is enough for now... LOL...

Of course she does not know about the discretionary funds account... LOL...

Thanks Mike

>I had a great time and learned alot. Now I have to decided which of my 2 kids to leave with their grandparents so I can bring the wood home. :)

I wont be looking at the Powermatic any time soon, but now the tormeck is begining to look like a income tax gift to me. (hopefully Uncle Sam is nice enough)

Mike cut himself to demonstrated the difference between a sharp gouge and a Tormeck sharp gouge. What a guy losing blood to convince me to buy it.

Had fun Mike and now I have something to look forward to when visiting my inlaws.

>Mike, that looks like the OneWay rotary vacuum adapter....is that right? and, does it work well on the PM3520a? Also seems that you have drilled and tapped a new hole in the front of the banjo for the locking screw for the the tool rest. This looks like a good idea to me. Think I will do that to mine.

>Jerry, the oneway rotary adapter is a dream. It is big enough to double as a decent handwheel, and it does the job silently, one never knows it is there. The only time I remove it is when I need to use a pushrod to remove a morse taper something or another, which is very rare.

I didn't drill a hole in the banjo - it came with two!

I have one beef with this PM that grows bigger every day - the spindle lock is sloppy, not to mention poorly designed, and there is no indexer. OK, that was two beefs. One of my new year's resolutions is to add a good indexer to the lathe.

OneWay Rotary Adaptor for Sale

Garrett in Victoria

>Hi Jerry,

Re Mike Schwing's comment, having switched lathes I have a OneWay rotary adaptor I've just decided to sell. It was briefly on a General 26020, and isn't as suitable for my new DVR 3000 as the one sold by Teknatool. If you're interested, e-mail me at GLIA@shaw.ca.

Cheers, Garrett

>Hey Ron- don't waste all that money for a Tormek- get a Woodcraft w/8" AO(white) for about $500 less and save it for the Powermatic!!!!

I might take ya up on that offer

Mike Schwing from Md.

>I want a higher speed, but not high speed grinder to compliment the Tormek. Profile changes aren't really do-able with the Tormek and I've been making a good number of my own tools lately. The Tormek is rockin' good for maintaining a profile and a severly sharp edge but I want a semi-hi speed grinder, too. What can I find in the 500-100 rpm range? Or should I look at something else? The Tormek swings at 90. I already have a 3450 rpm 6" B&D grinder - don't like to use it.
