Mark Mandell - Gone Round In Jersey

>My Christmas present finally arrived, a P&N 1-1/4" roughing gouge and a 16" Kelton steel handle for it from Lee Valley. Put'em together, reground the edge back slightly on the wings, and gave it a brief spin. VERY nice and especially solid feel on the tool rest.

This will make making big ones into big round ones (prior to making big round hollow ones) much more enjoyable than with the 3/4" drop-forged version I have been using.

Happy New Year to Each and All!!!

>Hi Mark,

Your post got me thinking about why roughing gouges never have a swept back grind profile. Anyone know the reasoning behind that?

>Michael,

I pitch the sides back only a few degrees, not like a celtic side grind, and maintain a rather short 45* bevel. With the slightly curved cutting edge I get something of a slicing effect when I rotate a little in the direction of cut. When I get the chance I'll post a pic. I would think, however, that a full swept-back grind would give such a long cutting edge that it would be impossible to control by "hand".
