The one that got away

The one that got away

Mike Schwing from Md.

>You gotta keep any eye on those silver maple blanks or they'll run right down the hill the moment you turn your head! That bugger is every bit of 20" wide and the ice is no where near the point where I'm going to go get it. One of my dogs chased it right down the hill barking her head off but stopped short of going in the water.

I suppose it'll float on over sometime around March.

>Mike,

All of your turnings are pretty amazing but what do you expect from blanks that can walk on water. Now if you could just get a Woodcentral hat on top of it.

>That off-the-lathe turning reminds me of my woodshop class in High School, years ago. The shop teacher failed to instruct us on the proper use of the lathe, and we thought it was a pretty cool joke to adjust the belts to high speed, when the student turner wasn't looking. A nutbowl, laminated blank split apart, with one half sticking in the ceiling, and the other crashing through the window, ending up out on the football field. It could have just as well cut the kid's head off. I know that we enjoy reading about all of our successes, but are there any interesting, (or tragic) stories that are worth sharing out there?

PS, we never heard of a face shield or eye protection, and I am surprised none of us were seriously injured.

>Almost 20 years ago now, I made my son a sled from plans that were in one of the wood working magazines. Where we live opportunities to sled are few and far between but sure enough shortly after completing and giving it to him we had a cold snap, sleet and freezing rain. The ponds behind our house froze over or shall we say skimmed over with ice.

You know what's coming, yep, down the hill and just as he realized he was going into the pond, he bailed. The sled hit the ice and ended up where Mike's blank ended up.

I am a fisherman and I was able to retrieve it with a fishing plug and so might you, Mike...

Get that fishin' pole out....

>Maybe you could save that bugger by tying a treble hook onto a fishing pole and "casting" for that thing.

Its' always something, eh Mike???

Good luck!

>Unless one of you guys wants that one, there's no need to save it. I have been blessed with literally too much quality wood to turn. I couldn't possibly see spending any time trying to save that blank as I can barely turn what I have in the backyard and house before it cracks. Just posted this as a funny. Glad ya'll enjoyed it.

For example - why bother saving that one when this is still on dry land? Bookmatched maple burl blanks, eighteen inches in diameter, each, by almost 3" thick. Incredible, eh! Just cut this one up today, right before that other blank rolled down the hill.

>Mike - Just use a Stretch 30 and one of your trolling rods. It will give you some pullage and feel alot like those spring striped bass.

>Well, you can use a 8mm or 10mm harpoon [depending on your chuck] and after you reel it in, you have the hole ready for putting it on the glaser screw.
