2nd chuck decision

Dennis Taylor (Akron, Ohio)

>I currently own a Talon chuck and just got a set of #2 smooth jaws, and have the #2 jaws that come with it and a set of jaws for smaller items...I am always swapping jaws...here is the ?...is it worth a 2nd larger chuck...i.e. SuperNova2 ..... or should I get a smaller cheaper chuck for the small items I turn?... the talon could be used for bowls and platters, and the 2nd chuck for the small items..any input is appreciated...have saved for a 2nd chuck, was thinking the SN2 but is it really going to be worth the $$$ for the benefit...tks to all who respond.. >Dennis,

I bought a super nova as the second chuck. Woodcraft store put them on the clearance table and it was hard to pass up.

>I really like the new SuperNova2 and the Teknatool chucking system in general, but in your situation, I would suggest you get a second Talon.

Why,

1. Because you say you do small scale turning and the larger chuck's capacity and jaw sets aren't going to prove that valuable to you.

2. Because the Talon is already a compact chuck and the other compact are not all that much smaller (for example, the Precision Midi is a little shallower and the old Nova Compac is a little smaller in diameter, but neither so much as to be worth going with another chuck)

3. Because you can get a fairly inexpensive minimal package for the Talon without jaws.

4. Because you will have only one chuck handle to reach for that will work with either chuck

5. Because you are already familiar with the Talon, its direction of rotation, and other idiosyncracies

6. Because the Talon is a darn good chuck.

This coming from someone who has both a Talon and a couple of SuperNova2s. FWIW, the Talon with number one extended pin jaws is the standard chuck mounted on my Jet Mini, though both a Nova Compac (with 43mm jaws) and Pecision Midi (with 50mm jaws) get substituted for some projects.

>A second chuck is a good idea. I hate changing jaws. If you are doing a hollow form and want to put a collor on it it's nice to have a second chuck for turning the collar. That way you don't have to remove the hollow form to do the collar.

I have 2 Super Novas and a new Nova Talin, (sp.).

Wish they all had the same key though.

>Hi, Dennis. I asked a similar question several months ago on the rec.woodturning newsgroup and received some excellent advice particularly from Lyn. The link is posted below.

I owned the Oneway chuck and ended up purchasing the Talon as a second chuck and am very satisfied with it.

Also, like Lyn, the Talon resides on my Jet mini with the spigot jaws attached. Since I now have two lathes (the Jet mini was purchased a month ago) I'll now be buying a third chuck!

>If you didn't already own a Talon I would suggest Vicmarc as I believe they are the best chuck out there [arguably of course]. Since you already have a Talon, I'd get a second one. This helps you save time on jaw changing. I have 5 VM100 chucks all with different jaws.

>A second chuck is nice, but you will still have to change jaws from time to time. If you haven't already I'd get a driver bit that fits the chuck jaws (think the Talon is 4mm). Then get a cheap cordless screwdriver and leave it next to your lathe. That way when you do have to change jaws it is quick and easy.

As far as a second chuck goes it depends on what size stuff you are turning. If you like your Talon then a second Talon would be nice as you can swap jaws, but really just about any keyed chuck will work for you.
