cheap chuck alternative?

Andy in Raleigh

>I just ordered a cheap (about $44 including shipping) Grizzly chuck:

http://www.grizzly.com/products/item.cfm?itemnumber=G8784&

and got back an email that contained:

Unfortunately, our G8784 4-Jaw Chucks are out of stock and have been placed on backorder. They are due to arrive at our warehouse in approximately 4-6 weeks and will be shipped as soon as they are in stock.

WAH!!

Is there another source for reasonably priced (okay, cheap) chucks of that type? I am looking for a 4 jaw round for holding tenons, not a knuckle buster - I already have one of those and it scares the crap out of me every time I use it.

Thanks!

Andy

>Hate to say it Andy but the OneWay Talon is going to be a heck of a lot better chuck and cause you lot's less headaches. Some others would say the Nova. Knuckle busting would be the least of your worries when it comes to flinging a piece of wood at your head.

Check out Russ' commentary on it at the link below.

I know the money is considerably different but save up. My opinion is it will be worth it. I have a cheap lathe and when I went to the talon rather than the monstrosity that came on it, it was a world of difference.

>As a temporary fix use a glue block. I am making wood nuts to glue to the glueblocks in place of a face plate. With a number of these you will always have something ready to turn while other things have finish or glue drying. Here is a pic of a small bowl nearly ready to part off to finish the bottom. After parting the bowl off I will face off the remaining glue blank and glue on another project. If the glue block is too thin I will just glue on some more block and then glue on another project. Notce that I have a thin wood washer next to the spindle lock collar because my wood nut was just a trifle thin. The nice thing about this is that if the glue block doesn't allow me to get in close enough at the bottom I just turn away some more of the glue block. I begin the glue block with a square cut from the end of a 2" X 4". Works for me. Who needs a chuck?

Here are four more woodnuts and glue blocks with small projects ready to turn.

To make the wood nuts I ordered a tapered 1" X 8 tap from Grizzly for under $10.00. Great price because it is a discontinued item. Item number is G6852.

>Andy Wrap masking tape around the chuck close to the face side. I do about three layers and that solvet the problem.

Good turning and be safe

>Can you turn boxes (I never get used to calling cylinders boxes) on a glue block? I am concerned about gluing to end grain, especially taking the leverage of the cylinder profile into account.

I have used a glue block screwed to a faceplate for small bowls. It wasn't terribly efficient. I think I spent more time working on the block, rounding, centering, gluing and whatnot than anything else.

>Guess I'll be a desenter here. I have just purchased a great Nova chuck but have been using one of the cheapy's for over a year. I have had no problems with it and think it's well worth the $45. I have enlarged the tommy bar holes slightly after pulling on them so much so hard. Certainly shows the metal is cheap. But it works fine. I plan to set it up for holding reverse turnings. I certainly think they are great as a starter chuck.

I have to admit that while I believe more expensive may sometimes be better, often "not quite so good" is just fine for many of us hobbyists. That's why I seriously thought of buying a Oneway or Stubby but settled on the Powermatic!

Bought my chuck from Penn State, so I assume they still have them in stock. You might check their web site if you don't get their catalog.

>I hope you don't have the misfortune that I had. Mine virtually commenced disintegrating during a run. Fortunately I powered down. The internal spiral gear was cast rather than machined steel. It was virtually turne to powder.

A device like a chuck is no place to save bucks. That is the centerpiece of a turning and it should be rock solid.

I wish you luck although I don't have much confidence.

>Don't diss my Powermatic. It hums. It flys. It is so cool. I mean all that and at less than half the price of a OW or an St.

I'm happy and cannot fathom why anybody would blow a roll on the OW.

>Andy, in the Fall 2004-046 printed catalog, page 55, item C3418, on special for $36.95. "Utility 4 jaw lathe chuck" includes adapters for 3/4" -16 and 1 -8, a screw chuck insert, plus the tommy bars.

You can view the printed catalog from a link at the bottom of the index on the left hand side of the main screen.

I have the Nova, and I am very happy with it. This appears to be the Chinese copy of it. From what I have heard, jaws are not interchangeable with the other brands, the holes are spaced just a bit off from them. I have never used the PSI chuck myself, and have no opinion on it.

>Andy I have made boxes with no problems. I don't find the glue block method to be anything but easy and fast.

Sam, I have made the wood nuts from walnut and Bay. Both cut with sharply defined threads. Bob Smalser recommends drizzling cyanocrylic(sp) glue on the threads and then retapping, but so far they have worked just great without that. It certainly wouldn't hurt to do that. He also recommends running the tap through both ways to help burnish the threads. I may try that sometime.

>If you go back to the first message, I have ordered this chuck and been told it was backordered 4-6 weeks. That's what got me looking around for other alternatives. I had another bookmarked at toolamerica.net (interesting name since they sell mostly cheap imports), but it sold out. I may just have to wait on the Griz order.
