Turning Rosettes

Tony - Memphis

>Anybody turned any rosettes? Looking to turn a couple of blanks to carve on. I made some discs and glued them via paper to some scraps that I turned tenons on to hold them in my chuck. The only info I found was by Lonnie Bird and he uses a scraper (which I don't own). Wondering if I can get away with using a bowl gouge? Nothing fancy mind you, just want to add some curves to the blank. Thanks.

>Take a look at the December 2004 issue of Fine Woodworking (Issue Number 173 - pages 90-91) - there's a pretty good article on turned/carved rosettes that are pretty easy to make. I recently made one for a bathroom cabinet that came out pretty well with minimal effort and it took very little time.

Good luck and have fun!

>Thanks. I have that at home, but I haven't looked at it yet. Does he cover the turning part? That's what I'm unfamiliar with.

>I've turned quite a few rosettes. I mount them by drilling a hole in the back side and use a screw chuck. I generally use a small spindle gouge to turn them, but have also used a skew and scraper.

Question?

>Bear with me, I'm still new to this turning stuff, but how do you use a spindle gouge on face grain?

Thanks,

>I use a spindle gouge mainly because I'm comfortable with it; a bowl gouge can be used, too. The gouge I seem to use the most is a 3/8" spindle gouge.I've got a couple of bowl gouges, but, since I don't make a lot of bowls, they don't get a lot of use.

>Thanks. I just bought a bowl gouge a while back. I made a brush holder thing for my wife (paint brshes) and I wanted to turn a base for it. Worked very well. I'll probably fool around with this project over the weekend and see what happens. I'm starting with extra thick blanks, so maybe I'll be able to get comfortable with it before I get them too thin!
