>nipple nibbler for Mike-here is the secret weapon I made to reduce the explosions when trying to eliminate those bothersome nipples left in the bottom of deep hollow vessels. It is a scraper mounted on a 3/4" cold rolled steel shaft which I can mount in the Stewart handle or the Jamieson D handle/boring bar. The secret is mounting the cutting blade/shaft at a diagonal angle to the L so that the tip is shearing rather than just scraping as you draw it center to L across the bottom at centerline and not below. Works like a champ, and leaves a really smooth center with no tool marks.

>Hey, looks like a winner Jamie. Could you explain how you made this, and where to get a scraping blade? Looks a bit like the blade Stewart puts out.

>I believe this bit was a Sorby, but I have also used HSS shaper blades. The steel rod is ground or filed to a flat on top or bottom, then tapped for a bolt. Rounding off the end of the rod gives extra clearance, and the size of the rod reduces any flex or vibration. And keep the chips cleared out with a vac or compressor.

I use a technique that Nick Cook taught me after he turned That ungodly number of platters. If my memory serves correctly he turned something like 1100. Anyway what he does is turn the gouge so the flute points toward 3 oclock. This is done as you approach the center nub. You lighten up the pressure on the tool and let it cut. It cuts very slowly but actually stops cutting as it passes the center. It has worked very well for me.

>Yea, I was talking about bowls and platters. Hollow vessels require your technique. Of course you couls always leave a stalagmite coming up from the bottom and tell them it's a signature from your Spelunking past.

>Thank you. I have experimented with multiple items in the past and a that same shaped Sorby scraper tip would be ideal at the bottom, I agree. Finding the steel shaft long enough would be the issue. Where does one get round steel stock like that?

>Hi Mike

I get my round stock from the local Home Depot. A 5/8"x36" piece of cold rolled cost me about $6. My neighbor who is a Gunsmith/Knife maker made up two boring bars out of them for me with 1/4" HSS tool bits. I'm in the midst of making my version of the Jamieson hollowing system.

Have to add a thank you to you too. Seeing your work has really inspired me to get into hollowed close forms. Or at least thats what I'm attempting to do. LOL Aside from small globes for Christmas ornaments mostly what I've produced is some really pretty sharpnel. Either way though its a blast!

Regards,

Spence

>Spence- don't say BLAST! And Mike, a variety of tool stock steel is available at Lowes and some larger hardware stores. It's usually in a rack of many sizes of metal material, and you will be able to stock up for future tools!
