>Ok, I know this is overasked, but what wine stoppers do you folks prefer these days? I'm not a wine drinker, but I thought they would make nice gifts for next year. I do know a few wine folks. Anyway, thanks for the help. The silicone slip on things at Crafts USA look real similar to the insert things that my wife uses on her red wine with the vac pump. Those work real well.
The silicon slip on's are the ones I've been making. They are priced right, and they sell for me. I think I'd have trouble selling a stopper for over $15.00 and that's what I'd have to do with the chome ones. I charge $10.00 for the silicone ones and they seem to go fairly well.
Dave smith showed me a little trick to make it real easy to make them. You make a jig out of two pieces of scrap 3/4" ply. You screw and glue the pieces together in the shape of an "L". so you have a 90 deg. angle. Then you drill a hole in one leg of the L for the dowel rod to fit through. After you insert the dowel into the stopper blank and glue, you insert it through the hole in the jig. Place the jig against the fence of your chop saw and it cuts off the dowel to the perfect length for the silicone thing to slip over. I hold the exposed dowel in a set of step jaws to turn them. Easy as pie :) I had apicture of the jig somewhere on my computer but I can't seem to find it right now ...of course!
>For several years I used the chrome stoppers. I discovered that if one is used in a bottle of red wine almost all the time the chrome will start to bubble. My sister had the same thing happen.
>I think I'll order up some of those and try them out. My goal this year is to do a few things like this and some spoons and coffee scoops and such to have ready for gift giving next year. That's the plan....we'll see, HA!
