Thread Spec for Bottle Stoppers

Mike-in-Michigan

>Got a bunch of stabilized maple burl I am going to make bottle stoppers with.. trouble is the stuff is so hard & also stabilized, the wood won't crush and let a standard mandrel or threaded end cut the threads. Figure the only way to do it is to drill them & use a bottoming tap to cut the threads. Trouble is I don't know the thread. These are chrome cone bottle stoppers, but I have a few Berea HDW ones to do too. I could experiment but I figure someone here has had the same problem and solved it so why re-invent the wheel. Any help would be appreciated.

I believe that if you have Lows, Home Depot or any good hardware store that they have thread and bolt sizing guages in their hardware dept. If they do not have the guage just tate a stopper and direct compare by using a nut.

I have drilled the hard wood a little over size and then threaded. Use the tailstock to turn the shape and sand. Then back off the tailstock to finish the tip. If needed to mount on the stopper use a drop of CA in the hole.

Good turning and be safe
