Mele Kalikimaka, you all

>Aloha,

Merry Christmas to all of you here at wood central.

I am posting pics of the first 4 hollow forms that I have done. They are all Koa wood with Kona Coffee collars. These were treated to the alsohol process and the finish on all but the first one is Danish oil. The 1st has friction polish followed by 2 coats of Deft sprayed on and buffed.

All critique is welcome.

>Fantastic work Doug, I only wish that the Koa Tree was native to this part of North America.

Seasons Greetings and have a great day.

Merry Christmas to you!

Dave Smith, Longview, WA

>Hi Doug,

Nice looking hollow forms. I didn't realize that the coffee wood was so light in color. Coffee trees aren't very big so the wood must be fine grained. I may have to get a couple pieces when I visit next month.

Speaking of visiting. Is it possible I could catch a ride with someone to the turning club meeting if I fly into Hilo airport? That would lessen the sticker shock of attending the meeting if I don't have to rent a car on the Big Island. What is the turning theme for January? Perhaps I can turn something for the occasion.

Barry, yes, I have considered those woods, but I try to stick to local woods available in Hawaii, as that is what my market is. Our tourists (my customers) want Hawaiian woods, not woods that they can find anywhere else. That makes it a little more difficult as really contrasting black or white woods aren't plentiful here. There is a Hawaiian Ebony called Uhi Uhi that is rare and on the endangered list. I am currently looking for some really white Holly and maybe some nice Ebony. Anyone has sources?

Mahalo to all and also A Happy New Year
