Jacob chuck problem

Howard Norman

>I have a Jacob chuck that is mounted on a MT #2 to use on my Jet 1236 lathe. I was attempting to make a bottle stopper. When I removed the tail stock the chuck came off of the MT shaft. I cleaned up everything with IPA and put it back on the lathe. Happened a second time. How should I be cleaning the shafts and the recess in the Jacob chuck to prevent this from happening? I could use some ideas that don't require me going to the store since this is Christmas Eve.

>Put the shaft in the freezer for a couple of hours. Put the chuck in the oven at a very low setting, maybe 150 degrees. When they are both to temperature just slip them together and put them in the lathe and jam it against a block and leave it to reach room temp. Make certain you get it lined up because you will not move it later.

>You might want to look into using a Beall collet chuck for winestoppers. Then you wouldn't have this problem.

Also, if you make the winestoppers with the conical metal fitting, there is an accompanying screw chuck that works perfectly. It has a threaded stud that matches the threads on the winestopper fitting.

I should have thought of that. I am getting old!

Thanks for the reminder.

>I have the same problem, then I realized that the tail stock MT is short. Shorter than the length of my MT chuck. So, I turn the tailstock handle all the way back and that seems to keep the Jacobs/MT happy.
