Mind if I join the party? w/pic

Travis Stinson

>Hello all. I've been lurking around here for quite a while and thought it was time I jumped in. I've been turning just about a year now and my world has been turned upside down by this bug! First off, I want to thank everyone who shares their tips, tricks, secrets and techniques so freely, as it benefits us all. I'll try to post the obligatory pic of one of my latest turnings. 7"x4" Maple burl w/ Ebony collar.

>Hi Travis,

That's quite a pic for an opener! I really like the look of that one and the ebony collar is a very nice touch.

Welcome to the board and thanks for the pics.

Mike

>Travis:

I don't know how long you have been turning and how long you have been lurking. But I really dislike people who jump in with an initial picture of a piece as beautiful s yours! Annoys the heck out of me, as it took me years to get to where you are! :-)

:-)

Welcome, and please share your tips and tricks---there are often times when I have thought "Oh, everyone knows that trick", only to find that that was not the case.

I look forward to seeing more of your work.

>Yup...It's addictive all right!! The problem is their is only one cure....keep on turning!

I have heard a rumor that a new group...Turnanon...will be starting in the new year.

There will be 24hr help lines for those of us that can't put the tools down.

I can see by the pic that you have the disease badly. You have been practicing in secret haven't you. You might be one of the people that will take forty or fifty years to get over this proplem.

Very nice indeed.

A question...where do you get the Ebony? All I can find up here in the frozen North is African Black Wood. I don't think they are the same...are they?

Have a safe and happy holiday.

>Hey Travis, nice to see you over here. This is another fine piece using an ebony collar. You should post pics of that quilted maple piece you did also.

>You're right Tom, it IS a nice disease to be afflicted with! Since I'm 41, I hope I have that long to try to get it right.

I got the Ebony off Ebay, a package of 10 listed as knife scales.

>Good looking work Travis, but we could see more of it against a neutral gray or white background. Notice how the side profiles disappear into the abyss- a lighter background would add definition and bounce back some of the lost light.

>Those are absolutely gorgeous pieces... one of these days... I finally got a bowl finished that did not become firewood...

That quilted maple is my favorite... but then again that wood is phenomenal... always loved quilted maple... it is just so 3D

>Cure? I regret to inform you........there is no cure.........only treatment.....and not very effective treatment, at that. Buying new tools and equipment can sometimes provide temporary relief.

>If you have a Woodcraft nearby, you might want to check in occasionally. Sometimes they sell grab-bags of ebony scraps. Not cheap, but usually some nice sizes of ebony for accent work.
