A Vase for my Mom w/pics

Jennifer@Indy.USA

>Hello Everyone,

Well as my Christmas gift turning frenzy has come to an end....I believe this is the earliest I've ever been done....I actually have time to bake some cookies today and enjoy some Christmas music.....it snowed a bunch here last night and it's really looking and feeling like Christmas. My family has a tradition that everyone must make the gifts that they give. So this year I decided to partake in making everyone peppermills....a new venture for me....and not a pleasant one I might add. They are done...and I might be brave and post a picture of them later. Let me just say this. Dr. Seuss would be proud! For now I'll just show you a vase that I made for my mom yesterday. Pardon the poor lighting...it was a rush job late last night. It's a piece of curly maple with an ebony collar.

It's about 8" tall. Sanded to 600 except the collar was micromeshed to 12000. Finished with Rockler gel poly.

Critiques and comments welcomed.

Hope everybody has a wonderful Holiday Weekend!

Peace,

Jennifer

>Hi Jennifer

What an outstanding turning. The shape and proportions look terrific. The sentiment on the bottom is sure to bring a tear to those who read it. Curly Maple is my favorite wood and that is an outstanding piece. And the 8" size is just about perfect for a hollow form. Not to big so that it might dominate a room and not so small that it would ever get overlooked. It is the size that invites hands to pick it up.

I can't turn Christmas presents. There is to much pressure. The last thing I turned with family in mind was an urn for my Dad. That took me several months and two tries to get looking the way I wanted. Besides I have a bunch of turnings, which are nice, that I can find a good home for this time of year.

Merry Christmas

>Hi Jared,

Thanks so much....I use a Dremel engraver to sign my work. This is not a very good example ....I had too much to cram into that little foot.

Happy Holidays!

>Thanks for the kind comments everybody. It's so incredible to have this great support group. You all have no idea how much you have helped me keep the lathe spinning and to keep trying to push myself.

Have a great weekend everybody!

That collar came from the box of goodies you sent to me. I think it's ebony?

>Actually Dremel engavers work pretty well. I use one occasionally. I find they work best on very hard wood like maple or ebony end grain. The script is not quite so conspicuous as pen and ink.

>A truly great piece.

I second the bah on pepper and salt mills. I did about 15 sets for Christmas and only the last one was easy
