gluing zig-zag

>I have cut my laminated seg at 30 deg with parallel seg and turned every other one over to make the zig zag and would like to know the best way to glue these together. I have been gluing two together, then 4 etc, but I am having trouble keeping the lines exactly even. any help would be appreciated.

>Gary,

Line all your segments up on end in a long line on a flat surface. You should be able to see where ajoining segments do not line up. Use a disk sander to adjust pieces until they all line up, an then glue them up.

Gluing them in pairs is one of the best ways to get them to line up - especially if there was any imprecision in your cutting process. Gluing them in pairs allows you align them as you go, Once you get them assembled into two half rings, you can square them up on a sander or a table saw to make sure that each half ring is 180 degrees, and then glue the two halves together.

Another way is to glue the whole ring at once, using a large hose/band clamp to hold it together. This is the way I do it.

One reason the segments will not line up when you flip every other on, can be because the laminations was not square when you cut the pieces.

Hope this helps.

>Hi Mark..Sorry to butt in...

A couple of short questions...do you square up all your wood on a planer or jointer before making your segments...do you use a table saw or miter saw to cut your segments?

Thanks

You're not butting in - that is what discussion threads are for.

I do not (yet) own a power jointer. I generally just use my table saw and my Dewalt Planner. If I have to straighten an edge, I use my Stanley #8.
