delta 955 9 inch lathe

Andy Sheetz, Charleston, WV

>Good morning,

I have been considering buying a lathe and have the opportunity to buy a 1943 delat/milwaulkee (sp) number 955 9 inch lathe for $70.00. I haven't done any lathe work for over 20 years. However, this seems like a great opportunity to get into lathe work without a huge investment.

I looked at the lathe last night and everything seems solid on it. No play in the bearings or any unusual noises when running. Are there any known problems with this lathe I should be looking for?

Any feedback will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

>These old lathes are a fun and inexpensive way to get into turning -- they are often much better made than entry-level lathes that are brand new. My dad's old 1952 Rockwell/Delta is still going strong -- I'd buy it.

>For $70, you can hardly go wrong.

But, be fore warned: Turning is addictive. It will not take long before the bug has bitten you and you find yourself heading off the local turning store to purchase all the latest tools, books, videos, etc. I forsee a bigger, newer lathe in your near future.

Turn 'em round,

>For $ 70.00 go for it. I have the first lathe that got me back in to turning. An Atlas from the 1930 s. I have modified it to use a treadmill variable speed motor and I use it to teach on. It works great for new turners.

Good turning and be safe
