Small jaws for Vicmark 3.5" key operated chuck.

Greg in Oshkosh

>Just got a Vicmark 3.5" chuck for my jet mini. Would like some jaws that can grip smaller items. there are three choices. 1" dovetail, Long nose jaws and Extended dovetail. The 1" dovetail expands into a smaller hole than the other two. the long and extended ones put the part further away from the chuck. All grip 1/4" spigots. Can't really see the difference between the long nose and the extended. Any recomendations or help would be appreciated.

>I have the extended jaws and love them. That is actually the reason I bought the vicmarc over the Oneway. I needed a set of small jaws that were very rigid and those are the ones. Because they are extended they are also nice for things like wine stoppers and miniatures. There's more room to work around the jaws without getting into the chuck body.

>Hi Greg,

I have this chuck, and the long nose jaws. they are more intended for expansion mode (or to grip very small items, as the inner surface of contact is very limited in this jaws). frankly, I use them very rarely. they are good to allow access to the back of the bowl, if you used a recess to chuck it. but I mostly use a tenon, and return the bowls to finish the bottom, so they are of limited use for me. moreoever, you have a better access to the bottom of the piece than on classic jaws, but you still are very (dangerously) close to the jaws, and it's not a very comfortable area to work in.

As for gripping, I would say the length of these jaws will be better (than the 1" jaws) if you turn long and thin pieces.

>As Pascal mentinoed, the long nose jaws gives you the most. I have the 1" and us them only for special items. I didn't bother with the extended. Youcan use the long nose for everything Pascal points out and I also use it for holding pen blanks while drilling, bottle stoppers and tops.
