A study in design

>Well the turnings below were a result of a discussion at my local woodturners groups last meeting regarding design. I had wanted to make a platter that resembled a slice off of a sphere and had no foot.
The piece on the left came first and I'm very pleased with the way it turned out. I hope my mother, whose been bugging me for a turning lately, likes it for Christmas. I call it "Opposing Nebulae" for the knots and dark pith accross the center.
The second piece was going to be a similar design but ended up coming apart mid-turn. Needless to say I'll have to replace two flourescent tubes in my shop. I pieced it back together with the copper wire, trimmed one end, sanded the fuzz off of it and named it "Art". Who knows, one man's trash is another's treasure.
Both are made of pecan and finished with danish oil.
