>Yes, her work is quite impressive--all the more when one considers she was really one of the very first to extensively intertwine carving and turning in a sculptural way. Quite a few pieces of her early work are in the private collection of Martha Connell, which is the only place where I've had the opportunity to handle her work.

I'm everybit as happy you mention Woodwork magazine. Woodwork has always devoted a lot of attention to the artistic side of woodturning, and every two or three issues has a great profile on an artistic woodturner (all in addition to their monthy practical piece by Childs). IMO Woodwork is a greatly underappreciated and under-recognized resource for woodturners.

>Have you ever seen her turn on the lathe? Now that is something to see. She uses a metal lathe, cause that's what her Dad used, she learn on it with wood. She is amazingly fast with those round handles.

When I go to my metal lathe, I'm more apt to turn the handle the wrong way, for the way I need to go, almost ever time. Guess I just don't do enough metal work.

I agree that it is one of my favorite magazines. It it also one of the least expensive. $17.95 US for six issues.

I have every issue. They do not have a web site, but here is a phone number to subscribe.

I have been fascinated with her work since I first saw it about 10 or more years ago. It is wonderful. She is so imaginative. Did you see where she said she didn't think she could make a ull time living with her stuff.

I'm going to build the carving cradle she had in the photo. I liked that Idea. I always have trouble holding pieces. I have the Bestwoodtools carving stand and it works great for some projects but not so good for others. I think the combination of her stand and possibly some no slip rubber would work great.

I'm also going to build a carving table with a foot controlled rope that I can stand on to hold a piece while power carving. This table will have holes all over so I can clamp or tie down almost anything.

>Have you thought about using the vacuum pump instead of rope to hold the work?If you incorporate a fixture(drilled thru bolt) with the same threads as your spindle then all the chucks that work to hold the work on the lathe will also be able to hold it on the bench.

When you say the "new" issue, what is that? Dec, Jan, etc. I don't get the mag but think brother does and I'd like to see this issue.

I have used the vacuum chuck and it works great for some things but not for others. I think bestwoodtools is making an adaptor to allow you to put the vacuum on the carving adaptor. That way you could put your vacuum chuck on the adaptor and swivel it anyway you want. I'll have to check with them and see if that project ever came to fruition.
