Spalted Alder Bowl

>I recently finished this bowl. It started out with the intentions of being a hollow form, but unfortunately came off the lathe one too many times. It is approximately 8" in diameter and 4 1/4" tall. I'm definitely still a beginner but enjoying myself nonetheless.

Suggestions, comments, recommendations and advice are all appreciated.

>Excellent! Simple form to show Mother Nature's finest work! Wish I had some wood like that! That is beautiful. Nice work. I like it better this way. As a hollow form we'd only have seen half as much of the figure.

>Hi Randy,

Well first of all.....you're doing great! This piece of wood is incredible. I love the simple form, even if it isn't what you intended.

It really is lovely!

The Inside of the Bowl

>Thank you very much for the compliments. I guess I was very lucky to have a piece of wood like this lying around. This bowl certainly allowed me to practice working on tear-out. Here's a picture of the inside.

>Very Nice !

The spalting makes it more beautiful, but tougher, too. You did a great job ! Looks like the pith is in the wall of the bowl -- if so, be sure to dry this one very slowly. Really soaking the end grain with a penetrating oil finish can help avoid cracks if you're concerned they could develop. Great use of a spectacular piece of wood.
