When I think of all the scraps I threw away

Carole in VA

>in my pre-lathe days (two weeks ago!), it makes me sick! I found this little piece of walnut behind the trash can yesterday. The pic does not do it justice...it has lights that flash as you turn it in your hand. How do you capture something like that on film, anyway?

>You've got it BAD Carole!!!!

It took me nearly 9 months to get past pens. They are so much fun. I still make a few every now and then. And they are still a LOT of fun to make.

The pens are also a lot of fun to give away and sell.

And you Carole seam to be having a GREAT time. BTW the pen looks great!

>When was the last time you turned on your table saw? Other than your bandsaw I bet the lathe is the only tool in your shop that has been on in two weeks!

Nice looking pen. You catch on quick.

>It is post like this that is encoraging me to start a blank of the month club next month. I don't turn much I have a low threshold to addictions. My wife was a widdow for a long time untill I covered the lathe and stacked junk on top of it. Any way I have access to large amounts of wood as I work down the street form the municipal tree dump the man at the gate knows to hold all burls from the tub grinder and I will pick them up. I also get lots of wood from a local factory. I'm thinking that every month I will mail off a chunk or two of wood to some unsuspecting woodworker for them to do as they wish. Hoping in the next few months they send somthing to some other unknowing person. Nothing beats getting a present in the mail. If any one wants a chance of getting somthing they need to send me there address. I never give them out to others with out asking first. and I have addresses for about 100 islanders.

You sure got the hang of pen making. It looks very nice. I'm looking forward to getting to that stage.

I know what you mean about the scraps.

I hear ya Carol!

>Carol,

Nice looking pen! Wait till you start turning the more complicated pens (like the European, or Americanas). Then the "addiction" really kicks into gear!

I started pen turning cause I wanted something to use up all the cool looking scraps I had laying around. Just couldn't bring myself to burn them. 100 or so pens, and bottle stoppers later and I can't pretend anymore that it's just a phase I'm going through! Maybe I'll slow down with them,....after next week. :>)

And I know the figure in the walnut your talking about! It almost looks like a hologram I have a walnut pen I turned a couple months ago. It was slated to be featured in my holiday craft show. It never made it. I claimed it and now it's MINE! (and it makes a great "display" pen to use during departmental meetings at work).

See ya around,

Dominic

>Carol,

Another thing to try with the walnut is the cigar kits in the Pearl Silver finish. They look stunning. I bought a large (400+) lot of Walnut crotch blanks and they look absolutely stunning with the Pearl Silver kits. Bill over at AZ Silhouette carries the kits for 2.95 each. Givem em a try. The cigar pens do make a heftier pen that I have great succes with.
