HELP - I Can't turn worth a darn

Doug in Denver

>OK, I am about to try my first turned legs. I have blanks of solid paduak, which, as you might imagine, I am not crazy about ruining. I will glue up as many practice blanks as I need to out of pine or whatever. To date I have only turned pens and a few handles for pen mandrels and things like that. I think I have the basic knack or "feel" for something like turning - but what I lack is knowledge. In other words, if I knew HOW to do it properly, I think I would be OK at it. I sense my most basic problems are proper tool orientation to the wood and a lack of a sense of how much force to exert on the tools. I tend to want to hold the tool neutrally, but not exert any forward thrust on it, and I sense that allows the wood to get the better of me and results in as many catches as improper tool orientation. Anyway, though a hands on class would be preferable, I really don't have time. Have any of you seen a video I can buy that is betther than any other on basic techniqies? At this point I am really interested in spindles, not so much bowls.

>Hi Doug, one of the best videos I've found on mastering the skew (which is a must if you are going to do primarily spindle work), is Allan Batty's Masterclass 'The Definitive Work On The Skew Chisel'. He takes you through every possible design feature you could want on a spindle, with excellent narration and videography. If you can find this, it'll give you everything you need. Check out Craft Supplies USA.

>Doug,

while books and videos are a great source of basic techniqure, NOTHING beats just good ol' fashioned practice. Sharpen up them chisels/knives and have at it on some practice blanks until you, for-your-self answer your own questions.

I ike to turn bowls, mostly little lidded ones, and I just have it fuquring out how to introduce the tool to the wood as I go along. Works for me anyhow. I don't sweat if this is the "proper" way to do it or not. I fiqure if I'm removing wood, that it proper enough for me.

>Howdy,

I was where you are right now about 6 months ago. Then I got out a bunch of 3x3 pine and fir blocks and started turning. Sure I did everything wrong. But one day all of a sudden the light came on. Now I can scrape, gouge, skew, and rock and roll. It just takes time. I'm probably the slowest learner on this planet and I figure if I can do it anybody can. I got the Lacer videos. They were okay, but nothing substitutes with slapping the iron (spelled arn up my way) to the wood.

I've done about 200 pens for the Freedom Pens Project and close to 35 coasters, bowls, plates, and such. I don't do spindle unless it involves turning new handles for my arn's.

Oh well, I might as well admit it. I'm just embarking on the dark side. I've been tasked by SWSBO with doing 3 salt/pepper grinders...

>At the Craft Shows when I talk to newbies I tell them when they have a pile of sawdust etc. as big as my 10 x 10 tent they will know how to turn. It takes time to develope the skill to make the tool do what you expect of it.

Good turning and be safe

>Check out a local resource like a Woodcraft store class or another skilled turner. Nothing shortens the learning curve like some hands-on instruction.

>Ditto on what Jamie said. I read books and looked at video's but watching a turner or better yet having them watch you will increase your skills tremendously.

The first set of table legs I turned I didn't turn. Well actually I scraped. Although I could make a skew cut and a spindle gouge wasn't tool bad I couldn't control them well enough to make 4 matching legs. I Used the parting tool to establish all the dimensions and then used a flat scraper or the skew on it's side to make all the shapes. You do have to sand a lot when you do this but I got 4 legs that looked pretty good.

Ditto exactly

>I could have written that almost word for word with my own experience.

This was the first table leg I ever turned, er...scraped. The beads have terrible brusing that would simply not sand out.
