Virus Alert *LINK*

>I've been being bombarded with e-mail messages that say they are returned mail and the complete message is in the attachment. I don't trust these sort of messages since they are coming in to my receiving mail address. Returned mail goes back to the sending address. In my case they are different. That is the first clue. Finally, I received one that was supposedly returned from Woodcraft and had a text message titled "Woodcraft News". Since this message followed the format of all of the couple of dozen I have received in the last couple of days, I decided to forward it back to Woodcraft. What do you know, my virus checker kicked in and said there was a virus in the message. I deleted the message and emptied my trash, but thought the warning should be passed on. I don't know if someone with my e-mail address in their address book has this virus or if this is some person with a sick mind targeting my e-mail address. Has anyone else had this problem?

>All the time, Fred. They run in bunches, close to the discount viagra pitches that come in from German ISP addresses.

If I send out mail, I know when it bounces. Everything else either gets hung in the SpamBlocker or double deleted and never read.

You're not alone, Man

>Hi Fred, I just got my computer running....something completely erased my hard drive....I think it should be made a criminal offense to send a virus intentionally. A year in jail may help these clowns change their tune, but I'm not holding my breath....

>Ouch, Keith! That must've been a real pain. I really feel for you! I did a backup onto CDs recently, but There is still a lot of stuff that I have created after the backup---if I lost that, I would be really po'd!

Did you have good backups? Do you know what the virus was, and, assuming you are using virus protection, how it got around it?

I just switched from OE and IE to Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird---a few problems here and there, but the main reason for the switch was that they arer supposed to be safer.

What a way to have to spend the holidays!

>Thanks for the heads-up, Fred.

I get a bunch of curious messages that have no subject, no body...

The other day, however, I had three strange emails: two were "addresses not found" kind of messages from the server indicating that the mail that I had addressed to them could not be delivered!

The third message was "my copy" of a message that I had supposedly sent around midnight that day. Again, there was no text, and nothing to trace, but that is my biggest concern...having my email address "hijacked" for illicit purposes...too many freaks out there with computers...in my opinion.

>email address hijacking is common with the worst hit being those of the big isp's AOL MSN Hotmail etc. In my case AOL's advice was either dump the username or put up with and ignore the messages from antivirus programs notifying me the mail I had 'sent' contained a virus/worm/trojan/creepycrawly/alien/peanutbutter sandwich/whatever. Strangely enough AOL were right ... after a short time it all stopped.

My understanding of the 'Open Source' mail programs is that they are inherently safer especially coupled with a good antivirus package but not watertight. Also some of their popularity (sp) is due to those who disagree with Mr Gates and his hold over the great unwashed. a choice of 3 OS is better than 2. Personally I am attempting to get my head round Unix/Linux but being booted on MSDos its all backwards to me ... Ruddy hell I had better mention woodturning, Bowls, shavings, Gouges and Grinds (now its not so OT)

>Being a mainframe programmer, systems programmer to be exact, I was around before the PC and have watched it develop from a toy to a bigger toy. I have also watched the boom of the hacker. No real programmer with any respect would ever refer to themselves or accpet being referred to as a hacker. Total lack of ability and skill is inferred.

For the most part the people that generate the viruses are fairly low on the totem pole as far as skill level goes. Most are copies or varianst of previous viruses. I think that a year in jail is way to passive, it still allows that person the time to pollute the gene pool. In my profession, you would more aptly find the body under thae raised floor. But, in the outside world this would not be understood quiet as well. At the very least they should be neutered and loose the use of theor right hand. This would cut down on the gene pool pollution and slow down their use of any PC. Continued offenses would lead to loss of use of the remaining hand. Should they persist, remaining body parts would be disabled up to and including the lungs.

You can't trust any programmer that doesn't work on water coolded machines or these days freon... :-) Those of us who do this for a living take a far dimmer view on these people than could ever be had by the typical home user - even the victims. But, if you made it this far, just remember that Windows is a boot sector virus - think Linux... or on a mainframe MVS/ESA
