The most important part is the blank prep, making sure it is square and ends are 90 deg to sides. Start off wrong and it will not work well.
They can be done with drilling as stated with a jig BUT they can also be turned.
Using chuck, use two jaws and mount the blank with side towards the tailstock (end grain up and down). Then turn straight into side like hollowing a small box. But doing it this way you have to turn it 4 times (or 2 times and go all the way through) and get it in jaws on center to make next hole. Marking a line all the way around it while square and using tailstock to align in chuck is easy way to do it. But it could be done with a stop jig that sets on ways of lathe.
When all this is done, then mount between centers for spindle turning and shape outside.
There is a clue that tells you they aren't inside out turnings and it can best be seen in the picuture of 2 on left.
Regardless which way he did it, they are very nice turnings and show high skill due to the spindle turning especially at top and bottom area's.
