>I bought a Vic 300VL long bed from OneGood Turn in San Antonio. Unfortunately and sandly, Paul Judkins has had to suspend operations as noted on his web site, due to some serious health issues in his family. You may want to put his wife in your prayers. He plans on resuming next year, I have two chucks on order when he does.
I looked at the long and short bed and went with the long bed. When you don't need the tail stock, you can just move it to the end of the bed out of the way, no heavy lifting as its not light. And the long bed is 1000lb compared to the 750 of the short bed. I have a Delta steel bed with a movable head and never had the occasion to use it as a short bed in turning bowls, so the longbed Vic made more sense for me.
There is no comparison to the CS Blue (its not a real Vic). The base is no comparison to the Vic, I have turned on the CS version. The base is extremly well made. The doors are cut from the front plate and flush mounted, not over fitting like the CS Blue. The base is made from 5mm or apx 3/16" and in itself very well made. Its made so the shaving will fall out the back via the builtin shoot. Th tool post is 30mm instead of the 1" std on most machines. CS has Vic bore the banjo to 1" on the ones they sell. Most of the larger lathes use 30mm or larger due to the flex on larger pieces that they can handle. And the drive that Vic puts in his machine is much better than the ones CS supplies. I have seen a CS Blue stall, and cannot stall mine. The standard motor from CS is 1 1/2 and from Vic is 2 with a vector type drive controller.
I had a choice between the Vic 300VL and a 2436 oneway, went with the Vic and never loked back. The wait on an real Australian Vic is well worth it, or it was in my case. It was five months and I would do it all over again. Good luck in your search, just think real Vicmarc...
