Things I learned tonight...

>A center finder might be a good thing to have.

Morse tapers get stuck if you crank on them too hard.

Willow, really dry, is soft and stringy. Or I need to learn more.

I just chucked up a coouple of odd small pieces and turned them round and played around. Only one scratch on my hand and chips everywhere.

I need to plan something to make.

>I don't have a center finder. I draw my circles with a compass and use the point to define the center, and then emphasize it with an awl or punch. Then I cut to the waste side on the bandsaw and I have my center well marked. On square stock, just draw diagonals from corner to corner and X marks the spot.

Chips DO get everywhere, just like sand at the beach.

And I have not been able to complete a single thing from any of that willow. It is all either too soft or I just don't like the looks of it, and you are right, it sure is dry. I didn't even wax any of those blanks, and they were 12x10's or so, not one cracked and they were bone dry all the way through. That was what, 8 months ago? Amazing.

>At least 8 months. Plus it sat in my yard for several months.

Glad to know you at least tried. I'll tell the guys that got it for me that it is not working out well.

There's a small mill down the raod. I'm gonna go by and see if he has any thick short pieces I can buy. I figure any hardwood at this point is ok.

>I feel better now. The only time I used my lathe before turning my basement over to the remodeling contractor, was to work with a piece of that willow. I was thoroughly disgusted but thought it was just inexperience.

Your welcome to one of the hunk's of cherry I have on my woodpile that I got from Mike's wood dump.
