Oneway Talon Question for Rob Lee and others...

Martin from Granbury

>OK, I am about to pull the trigger on a Talon chuck, but, before I do, please answer a couple of questions for me.

In the current LV catalog, on page 48, there are two Talon chucks listed with different headstock thread sizes. I am buying this for an old style Jet mini lathe (without the variable speed, I am afraid). I am pretty sure I need a #2 morse taper, but do I need a 1" by 8 TPI or 1 and 1/4" by 8 TPI headstock thread size?

What difference does this measurement make? Will I be unable to use certain accessories if I choose the wrong one?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Martin, remove "5" for correct email

>Martin, the Talon chuck utilizes an insert that can be changed out for different thread configurations. I have a Talon, and I use it for my large lathe, and my Jet Mini. You will need the Talon with the 1" x 8 TPI for the Mini lathe. If you get a lathe with different thread size down the road, you just need buy the appropriate insert and change it out. Most vendors sell the Talon with the insert of choice included in the deal......and they will install it for you. I bought my Talon from Packard Woodworks, and it came with the insert already installed. Great choice in chucks, by the way. I love mine........wouldn't own anything else! Happy Holidays!

>Hi Martin,

Great choice for a chuck. I have the same Jet Mini (pre-electonic variable speed) and use the Talon on it. I've had great luck with it and consider the $200 price tag small for something that works that well. Like Kevin said, you will need the 1"x8tpi to fit the Jet Mini. The Jet is a MT #2, but that doesn't really affect the chuck as it screws onto the spindle like a face plate.

Good luck with the chuck, I hope you like it as much as I like mine. I've got the spigot jaws as well, which I don't use that much, and the Cole Jaws, which I use a *lot*! They work really well.

Good luck and have fun!

Mike

Gonna need my long johns tonight in Apex, NC!!!

Thanks Kevin and Mike!

>Thanks for the clarification. I didn't realize that the chuck would thread onto the lathe...I thought that was what the morse taper was for. Thanks for clearing that up. I'll be ordering mine today.

As always, I appreciate the help from the excellent people at this excellent board.

Thanks,

>I know I'm late in this, but the talon works great. I got mine for my old Jet1236 with a 1x8 insert. When I got my Powermatic I just changed out the insert for a 1 1/4x8 insert. It still works so well I haven't replaced it with a larger chuck.

>I sure like my Talon chuck on my Jet mini lathe. I tried all kinds of ecconomy chucking arrangements first and wish that I had gone for the talon scroll chuck first. It cost me $305.05 after shipping and taxes in Canadain dollars but I feel it was worth every cent of it.

>Harvey, I just received a Talon chuck for my Jet 1236. How large a bowl have you used the Talon on with the Powermatic lathe?

>My biggest has been about 14" finished but I'm working on some bigger ones that look to be closer to 16-18" finished. I have bought a larger set of jaws and those make a big difference. With a light to medium cut it does fine, but you can get the blank to come off if you get too agressive.

I really should get a bigger chuck some day though as this is definitely the limit for my poor little chuck. Then I can use the talon for the mini lathe I don't have yet. The talon does have a smaller amount of adjustment than the bigger stronghold, and it does not open as far either, but it is not a big deal for most lathes. On the plus side, the smaller chuck makes it easier to cut very close to the tenon.

I have done up to about 10-11" finished with the original jaws on my old Jet1236 and for that lathe it is more than fine. I never had much luck turning outboard but you should be able to go bigger than I did.
