Latest Piece

>This is a piece called "Tempest" that I have been playing with for about 7 months. Total of about 16 hours in on it. Maple burl hollow form, carved, pyrography (hatch marks), honey locust thorns (feet), chestnut stain (black) under black gesso. 6" tall x 5 1/4" diameter. The design was inspired by Terry Scott & his work when he came to visit earlier this year from New Zealand. Terry spent about 2 hours talking with me about the design and carving techniques when he was here.

>Thanks Gil,

Gesso is a acrylic based liquid that is used to prep canvas prior to painting on them. It comes in black and white and the white can be tinted to other colors. It is a little thinner than acrylic paint and it dries faster. There is also something in it that causes it to dry very evenly and it hardens to a clay like base.

The soft sheen finish you see on the piece is straight off the soft bristled brush I use, no sanding, buffing, etc. required and was dry in about 1/2 hour. It can also be cut and polished with steel wool & buffing wheel to a high shine.

>This is a very interesting piece Chris, but I have to ask, why did you choose maple burl for a piece that is essentially painted black? It seems to me that something lackluster and stable would fit the bill just as well, and save the figured wood for a piece with a clear finish.

>Hi Bill, it wasn't until the very last minutes that I decided to cover it up. The original intention (back in June) was to leave one side unburned, uncolored, etc. so there would be the contrast of the natural and altered sides, but as the creative process moved forward and the piece took on a darker meaning, the stark black seemed to fit more appropriately. Trust me, I'm one of the last ones that would plan to do this to burl in advance...I don't get alot of it around here and what I do get I have to pay for.

>Thanks to you all for the kind words. This will be a series that is for sure. I haven't named the series yet, but the next 2 pieces ("Overwhelmed" and "Seduction") are already planned out. "Overwhelemed" is already about 1/2 way complete.
