Testing picture capability

Don Evans

>This is really just to test and see if I have my this picture to server working.

If it works, you should see a tagua nut vase with african blackwood spindle base. The most slender part is slightly less than 1/8", cannot remember the other dimensions but around 7" high.

If on dial up this image is 65k.

Question for the guru's

Don Evans, Raleigh, NC

>Because the pix was over 40k, I used the Option Image URL box. Does that mean the picture resides on WoodCentral location or does it download each time the message is viewed?

>Any browser pulls it from your server, not WoodCentral's, as that is where it is located. Generally only once, as is caches it.

>I see, thanks for info. I wonder about the physical size also. I resized it using Vueprint32 so it would be 800 x 600 but 3.5 x 5". Sure is a lot bigger than that on my screen. Any tips on making it more correctly sized?

>The size on your monitor depends upon the image size (800x600 in this case) and the resolution of your screen and the physical size of your screen.

If you have 17" monitor set at 800x600, then the image will be the whole monitor! Actually it will be scrollable for the window borders and such unless you use it as wallpaper. If you have that same 17" monitor set to 1280x1024, then the image will take up less than half of your screen (36.6% to be precise).

If you have a 21" monitor set to 1280x1024, then the image will take up the same 36.6% of the screen, but of a larger screen, so it will be shown larger.

Does that help?

>Yes that helps thanks. But what I am really trying to figure out is: some post here the picture is physically smaller. Apparently, the program I'm using VuePrint32 doesn't change that even though I resize the picture using physical dimensions like I state 3.5 x 5".

So what is the best way to do the physical change, with the resolution?

I guess if I knew what most posters used for resolution, physical size etc would help alot.

I did note that if I right clicked on my posted picture and the view where it shows in another window then it is physically smaller (no scroll bars needed) but I could also click on it and enlarge it.

Just never played with pictures before, much, so a new learning curve here.

Anything posted on WoodCentral about posting pix?

>Resize via resolution (pixel size). 800x600 is a bit big for most people's monitor resolution, and unless you turn up the jpeg compression, it's a bit much for those still on dial-up (that's the only choice available for some people). I don't recommend turning up the jpeg compression too much though, as the picture quality suffers.

I often use 350 as my large dimension. The way my digital camera is set-up that means I get a 350x232 or 232x350. I use that merely because it's what I use on my website as the small photos for my project pages. I then link that to a 800x530 image for more details. On my website I also offer a link to the full 5 megapixel image at 2560x1696.

Here's one reason to go smaller:

Image Size Approx File Size

350 x 232 30k

800 x 600 110k

2560 x 1696 2200k

>Don, Beautiful turning!!

Your picture is about 57K and it is not a wood central file. I recommnd you download PhotoFilter. It is free for noncommercial use. It allows you to set the file size when you try to save the file. It can do everything, except cropping.

>Ok Wayne, thanks for all the information. I'll use the 350 as a bench mark for this site.

Vueprint32 allows changing resolution and physical size so I'll use the resolution.

I shoot everything in camera with 1200 as I can do about 100 pix with card I have in it. Then use a Scandisk to input them onto harddrive in computer.

Simple and easy.

Appreciate you taking all the time.

>Thanks Bob, I'll take a look at the program.

Regarding the turning, I'll post another you'll like if you like that one, but I've got to resize it first.

The program I have now will let me do it with resolution also.
