Fluted Columns

>I'm considering making a set of table lamps and the design that I had in mind is a simple column with routed coves running the length of the column (maybe 8 coves in all). I was considering building a frame that I could clamp to the bed of my lathe that would extend above the turned column - I was considering using this as a base that I could let my router (PC690) ride along. Does anyone have any recommendations for routing these coves, or perhaps know of a web site that describes methods and/or jigs?

>Hi Brian,

I have done that. You need an index, if your lathe does not have indexing, you have to figure out a workaround. You need to build a chute where the router runs, the bit has sto be centered on the work and the chute must be just wide enough to let the router slide but no more, so it runs true, you also need a round nose bit, that's about it for a fluted cilinder, if it is tapered gets more complicated but basically you need to improvis a tail stock that is lower or higher than the spur drive to match the taper.

Clear as murk?

>Thanks! That at least confirms that what I had in mind should work. My lathe (Oneway 1640) does have indexing, so that won't be a problem - this will actually be my first opportunity to use that feature. I'm off for a couple of weeks after this week, so I hope to give it a go.

>Brian, I sent you an email but it bounced back to me for some reason. I was looking through a magazine this past weekend and I think I saw a jig that may solve your problem. It looked very simple to make. Sits upon the bed of your lathe and uses a router to make the flutes. Send me an email at: gwhitabmw@aol.com with your snail mail address and I will copy it and send it to you. I do not have the capability to put in in electronic form for you and others.
