Pen Mandrel problems

Ron Parsons SE NM

>I have a Grizzly G8690 lathe that I use for pen making. The problem I am having is the junction between the live center (Grizzly MT1) and the end of the mandrel (Penn state). The mandrel and the tip of the live center are wearing out. Any suggestions?

>What kind of live center are you using? Woodturning live centers are intended for spindles, and for contact with wood, and have the wrong tip angle.

I use a 60 degree included angle hardened live center, same as used for metal machining. You can get one at reasonable cost from Grizzly, Harbor Freight, or try www.littlemachineshop.com for about $12.

Since all it is going to do is keep the end of the mandrel centered, there is no need for a heavy duty center. Unlike the wood centers, these have a hardened point, and they fit the mandrel.

>Yes, cup centers are for wood, and are not hard enough for metal to metal contact. The 60 degree included angle is also very important, since that is the angle of the cup in the end of the mandrel.
