Does anyone use their lathe indexing and

Bud

>Hi all

I most likely will be ordering a new lathe early next week. I wont say what- cause this is not a Gloat. Maybe I will do a Gloat post when it is delivered;-) Those of you that use indexing on your lathes, for designs (not as a spindle lock that will ruin this precision feature) , do you see a great advantage to more indexing increments? The lathe Im ordering has 48 standard positions & 96 as an option with an additional cost. I have only used indexing several times, but who knows what I may want to do down the road. So, those that actually use indexing, do you see more positions as many as 98, as a real advantage, or extra nice feature,if needed? Also those of you that do any indexing work in your design and have a website with some examples of your work, I would like to see it, if you care to post a link.

Thanks much & Safe turning!

Bud

I use indexing all the time. I use it to drill evenly spaced holes for inlays, routing flat sides on a turning, laying out lines for carving etc. I would say that most of the time I'm using far less than 48. The only thing I would like to see improve is to have the option of an index like they do on metal lathes with 5 or 6 rings of different spaced holes so you could get any spacing you want.

>I use indexing at least once a week. I had 48 position and just recently upgraded to 96. BTW 96 also gives you 32 which you can't get with 48 indexing.

I know many woodturners who have indexing on their lathe and they have never used it.

Indexing rings

>The one on my Nova 3k is useless because the hloe to see the numbers is in line with the spindle and close to it. Can't see it with something more than 4" diameter or so mounted. I picked up a metal lathe index ring with several sets of holes on ebay for $12 that has a 1 1/4" hole. I just mount it behind the chuck. They aren't that hard to make either.

>One thing to remember is that it is easer and more acurate to buy a lathe with the indexing you will need built in as opposed to adding it on later. The problem with some add on indexers is that they are in the way while turning and dificult to put on when needed.

Hope this helps Duane

>How long of a delivery time did they quote you? They told me 6 to 8 weeks and it was 12 weeks to the day when mine arrive. But let me tell you, the wait was worth it. I had been turning on an old Delt/Rockwell "highschool" lathe for 15 years.
