Thanks Everyone!

>Thanks too all for the wonderful comments. Your encouragement and positive remarks really make a difference and prod me to keep at it. I am really surprised at the fact that you offered so many positive remarks about the Sat-Turn piece. I think you've convinced me that it's not as goofy as perhaps I thought it was. Thank you for that!
I appreciate all of your kind words and although there are things about each one of these that I would change now that they are off the lathe...they are what they are and I'll take what I've learned from these pieces and hopefully apply that to the next.
Peace,
Jennifer :)
Re: Jennifer, how big are those minis?
Jennifer@Indy.USA
>Hi Carole,
They vary in size but most are about 2" tall. You'll notice I place my ring in the foreground so you can sort of get an idea.

>Scott,
Thank you for the really kind words. Perhaps I didn't give Sat-Turn enough credit? After reading all of the nice comments here today, I might have look at it in another light :)
I didn't know Bill collected mini's? I just bought some blanks and kits from him not long ago...great guy. I'll have to stick one in the mail for him.
Thanks again,
Jennifer

>Jorge,
Your words are really true. I'm not thinking as much about the diciplines of turning but more about what I want to happen with what I have on the lathe. There was a time....and it still happens often.....where I just accepted whatever it was that developed. Now I think I'm getting a little bit more control over what the finished product looks like. There are always the ones though.....that you just have to accept as they are. The turning Gods just do not cooperate : )
Thanks for your sweet words Jorge.

John Jordan Hollowing tool.. *LINK*
Jennifer@Indy.USA
>Hi Stan,
Thanks for such kind comments. I'm using the Don Pencil hollowing system which is the armbrace style handle that holds different tool ends. One is straight and the other hooked/curved in order to hollow wider vessels. They each hold a HSS cutter that esentially scrapes the sides to hollow it out. I have recently aquired the John Jordan hook/curved tool that fits into my Pencil handle. For some reason it cuts smoother and isn't as grabby while hollowing. I find myself much more relaxed while hollowing when I have the Jordan tool in the armbrace. It doesn't have quite as sharp an angle on the hook and I think that might have something to do with it? Anyway, that's what I use for the larger ones. For the mini's I use a handmade tool, made by Bob Rosand. I bought it from him when he came to our club for a demonstration.
Thanks again Stan.
Jennifer
I hope it's oaky, but I've added a link to an article on the Jordan tools by Lyn J. Mangiameli from "More Woodturning" November 2003.

>Jennifer, As always you work just keeps getting better and better!!! We remember when you didn't have a lathe. That camphor really turned out nice. It is amazing, the beautiful grain under the bark. Since you mention it, I think both Bob and I should go out and sniff a little of that stuff ourselves! We are looking forward to receiving your box. :)
Keep up the good work! Bob and Sonja

>Hi Jennifer and Jorge,
You two hit the proverbial nail on the head. I've got a good friend at work who asked if I would turn a cereal bowl for her husband. He apparently really wants to eat his morning cereal from a wood bowl :)
Anyway, I've turned two for her out of very nice pieces of hard maple and while the bowls look nice, in my opinion, neither one are really what I would consider a cereal bowl. I mean, you could pour your milk and wheaties in whatever bowl you want, but I think a cereal bowl has a certain shape and feel and try as I might, I just cannot get it to work. It was almost as if the two I've done didn't want to be cereal bowls but rather the salad bowl types they ended up? I don't really think the wood "wants" or doesn't "want" anything, but it was frustrating that this nebulous shape I had in mind of what a cereal bowl should look like just would not materialize out of the maple.
I think I am still at the mind wandering stage and let the wood dictate what the piece will be. I'm still trying to work towards getting the wood to do what I> want!
Still, I like the two pieces and think they turned out nice and I like the oil/wax finish. I'll take them to Judi tomorrow and see what she says.
Thanks again for the pics, Jennifer, they are all great pieces.
Mike
PS - Jorge, did you ever figure out what your lathe problem was?

You're too kind :) hopefully my "voice" will stop craking an I'll be singing my own tune one of these days :)

>Alan,
Thanks :)
For the mini's I usually use a glue block, or I'll turn a piece between centers and make a tennon on an end to hold in the chuck. Sometimes I can get two mini's out of a 4 or 5" long piece. I use my 3/8" bowl gouge or my 1/4" bowl gouge to shape them and then for hollowing I use a small tool that Bob Rosand makes and sells. He came to our club a few years ago for an ornament demo and I bought both the 1/4" skew and the hollowing tool that he makes. Here's a link.
Thanks again Alan.
