Vase, To Paint? pic

Ken DeMarco

>Hello all,

Here are a couple of pics of my latest. I really like the way it came out. My wife, not so much. Kind of ugly was her comment. usually she is right. in any case I had MUCH fun making it. I am contemplating painting the inside black, what do you think? it is 5.5" tall and 6" wide. Any comments appreciated!

Thanks

IS IT ART

Chank South Jersey

>ITS nice I think painting the inside black would distract from the form. try lining it with some black paper first to get a better idea of how it would look.

>I like it the way it is.If you feel that you must do something with the inside, try something like gesso, it can be tinted any color and you can also apply it so that it has some texture. Try it on some other piece first tho..take care.....

>Great job! If it was mine, I'd leave it natural inside. Because the openings are so large the black would sort of take over.

>Hi Y'all,

Ken, great work. I think you are on the right track with the notion that the viewer would appreciate it better if there where a more immediate differentiation between the inside and the outside. That is a lot of spatial relationship to get your mind around. But I'm with Wally, I think that black might be too powerful.

A good contrast for the wood colour that shows up on my screen is a duck-egg blue. (think Arizona turquoise) Some other interest of corral and black could be added if emphasis was needed to draw the viewer into the interior.

Regards Sam Simpson.

probably not

Ken DeMarco

>Thank you, almost too easy an answer, can try several colors that way without having to sand off paint

I have been leaning towards leaving it but have not been able to make up my mind, too indesisive for my own good.

Thanks

>Ken,

Do a Google on Barbara Hepworth [British Sculptor] then look at her carved and polychromed pieces. You might get some insights from her interior/exterior colorations.

>Ken, this is nice work, and the self emptying aspect while hollowing is nice, eh?

I would not attempt to change the color of the interior. If you are thinking about that to disguise any interior tool marks, or instead of sanding, it will be obvious.

Also, the circle at the top through which you hollowed the piece distracts from the natural lines on the rest of it, and IMO, does not complement. I would consider carefully reshaping that circle to match the rest of the void, then coloring it to match the bark lines.

Nice work, I like this piece a lot.

Nice tip Mike.

>I agree that the round hole at the top is alittle distracting and takes a bit of the magic out of guessing how the piece was done.

Re: Vase, Thanks Mike!

Ken DeMarco

>Thanks Mike,

Although I dont mind the rough appearance of the inside, I must admit to thinking the paint would hide tool marks to a degree, but mostly I thought the contrast omight be nice. Thank you for your thoughts in the top, I had not even considered that. So nice to have several experienced eyes, and gifted minds look at this. So much of what I make I call "almosts" as in almost nice, this one I think is a lot closer

Thanks Again

>Thanks Sam.

I had not even considered other colors, I have a single track mind sometimes. I am going to try Chank's suggestion using paper inside to get a feel for what it will look like, and will try other colors also. I think I am leaning toward leaving it as is now

Thanks

>Very nice Mike....I am really starting to like the natural looks more and more....they are more art than utility. I think galleries like them better too.

Have you tried any of the stuff I sent you yet? I'm looking forward to seeing some of the myrtle in finished forms.

I just tonight cut out a couple of blanks from the myrtle one for a bowl and one for a vase, hopefully turn it tomorrow, I will be sure to post the results if they come out ok.

Thanks
