How Much Grinder Vibration and other questions?

Stuart Johnson

>I just purchased one of the Woodcraft slow speed grinders and wonder about vibration. First off, I have never used a regular grinder before but do use a Tormek. When it has come up to speed I can feel some vibration but seem to get a clean grind with no bumping. Just how much vibration should I expect or accept? Should it be bolted down or are the rubber feet okay?

Have any of you made up a wider rest? The ones supplied seem awful small.

>In my opinion, if you can get good smooth grinds from it, it is OK. No absolute need to bolt it down if you just doing light grinding, and the vibration is not moving it around.

Most of the rest supplied ar junk. I happen to like my Wolverine rest that comes with their kit, but there are a few good ones out there. Of course, depending on your skills, you can modify the one you have, or make another.

>Thanks Mark, a Wolverine is on my list but will have to wait a bit. The vibration isn't bad but it certainly won't pass the nickle on edge test.

>You might try adding some weight to your grinder stand. I have the heavy duty Delta 8" to go along with my Tormek. The delta weighs 100lbs and there is no vibration whatsoever. It is bolted to a stand and there is no vibration in the stand either. No balancing weights, just 100lbs of weight...

>Remove the wheels and turn on the grinder. If it still vibrates, return it. If there is no vibration, it means your wheels are out of balance. You can try moving them around to different positions to compensate, or you can get the Oneway grinding wheels balancer syste. I have that on both my grinders and they WILL pass the nickle test.

>If you're not getting any bounce, then just bolt it down and you'll do fine. No matter what you can't compare ost of them to the Tormak.

I don't have any vibrating machines

Carole in VA

>I just have crooked nickels. :>)

My Woodcraft grinder should arrive today. Will let you know what I find. The way the shipping companies have been treating my packages lately, I will be surprised if it arrives in one piece.

$50 add on to a $75 machine

Stuart Johnson

>Thanks Peter, I'll probably try your suggestion just to see if there is any difference. There is something about paying $50 to fix a $75 grinder that just doesn't seem right but I've done worse things.

>That is how I feel Stuart. Spend a little more on the grinder and you won't need the balancer.

What's to fix??

Peter Teubel

>If the wheels are out of balance, they're out of balance...period...no matter what grinder you put them on. Sure, if you get a 100lb Baldor or Delta grinder, it'll absorb more vibration. But if you're looking at the bottom line, its still cheaper to balance the wheels on a Woodcraft grinder than get a Delta 23-725 (which is being discontinued, BTW). And the price of a Baldor 8" is stratospheric...

>If paper is under the mount screw that's probibly the culprit. Remove all paper.

No luck?

Turn the grinder so it's wheel axis is parallel to the ground. Spin the wheel a few times. Mark which side is down when the wheel stops. If the same side stops down, that's the heavy side.

Hit it with a hammer accordingly (you know what I mean)

Happy Holidays

>Jim,

I have to disagree, all of the grinding wheel manufacturers stress that you need to keep the paper on the sides of the grinding wheels. These allow the washer to seat to the wheel w/o cracking the wheel.

Re:Yes. Paper cushion is important safety feature.

Al Crandall

>Surface grinder wheels always were mounted with the paper cushions attached. We had a Blanchard grinder with 3 1/2' dia segmented grinding wheel. The segments had leather on each end for cushioning when they were clamped in place.
