>lately I have been deep hollowing vessels up to 16 inches useing a 6 inch face plates or a stronghold chuck with #2 jaws with two steady rest. (I know this is pushing the envelope). Of all the ones on the market, supernova2 with powergrip jaws, axminster with grip jaws, oneway with #4 jaws, or the vicmarc 5 1/2 with shark jaws, which one would do the best job. would appreciate your comments.

>The Teknatool Titan with the massive Titan PowerGrip Jaws are superb for coring big bowls and holding large hollow forms. I've always been faceplate person for these tasks until getting the Titan, and now I've almost entirely switched to chucking. The wide base of the jaws helps reduce leverage on the base; they are very deep so you can use a long tenon; the interior is serrated for a great grip; the external has a smooth dovetail for use with platters and other times when you want to minimize marring; the walls are thick and the base is attached with three screws to absolutely minimize flex of the jaws under heavy loads. Add to this a chuck that has long travel, has the easiest to insert and manipulate handle on the market, and can take the very wide range of other Teknatool Jaws, including the smaller standard Powergrip jaws for smaller work. Obviously I like this pairing a lot.

The SuperNova 2 is a great chuck at a significantly cheaper price (new review on it and the Precision Midi will be out in More Woodturning next month) and pairs very well with the standard PowerGrip jaws. I have always liked these jaws a lot and have found them alone to be a reason to have at least one SuperNova. The new SuperNova 2 is superior to the original in almost everyway. Still, the standard PowerGrip jaws on only 4 inches in diameter while the Titan version are 5 inches, deeper and heavier. Compared to a 6 inch faceplate, I think you will find the Titan version closer to what you've come to expect.

>How about the Vicmarc with the Stuart Batty jaws? That's what they were designed for. (See CraftSupplies - probably available elsewhere also).
