Question for Mike Rubes

Jorge Castaneda

>Good morning Mike,

Last night my lathe developed a thump thomp tippy tippy thomp and now the only surface I get is ropping, no matter what tool is used, (roughing more boxes), so I disconnected the belt, turned the lathe on and the motor runs smooth, so I reckon is the spindle bearings.

I recall you replacing the bearings in your machine early this year and tried doing a search, but it only gives me your post back to august.

Where did you get the replacement bearings?

TIA

Jorge

>Hi Jorge,

I'm sorry to hear that your lathe is having troubles. I'm also sorry to say I cannot help because I didn't replace the bearings, my problem was in the drive belt. Some of the ribs on my belt had worn off so I just replaced that. I thought about replacing the bearings while I was in there, but then didn't do it.

Sorry, hopefully someone here can help you out with this.

Good luck, let us know how it comes out.

Mike

>"thump thomp tippy tippy thomp" sounds more like a belt. I think bad bearins make a more continuous vibrating sound. I would look at the belt first.

Replacement bearings

Bob Hackett

>For what it`s worth you can take the bearings down to any local bearing supply house and they can cross reference them and get replacements for you.Now would be the time to upgrade to better bearings and double sealed if you do.

As far as the procedure to remove and install goes the manufacturer should be able to e-mail that to you or at least put a tech rep on the phone to explain it.

Hope this helps,Jorge.

Loose pulley(s)??

Russ Fairfield

>That is also the sound of a loose pulley. Either pulley could cause the noise, but if it is telegraphing to the work, I would check the one on the spindle first.

Tighten the set-screws anyway, and the noise should disappear. The movement in the pulley may be so small that you can't feel it.

Thanks everyone,

Jorge Castaneda

>The belt seems to be in good shape, tightening the pulleys took care of the tippy thump, but now there is a steady rumble and I can wiggle the chuck quite a bit, so I think is the bearing on that side.

The lathe is a Delat midi and the manual wxplains how to change the belt, to do so the spindle has to be removed, so maybe just tapping the bearings will take them out, if not, I know where to borrow a puller and there is a bearing place in Bangor to get the replacements.

I will follow Bob's advice and put the double sealed bearings and if I can find it replace the belt as well.

Thanks again

Jorge
