Central Santa

Ernie Miller *Topeka

>For thoes of you who didn't play this year Ha Ha! This is the present that I made for my reciepany Bob Hackett. It is a Cherriot plane made out of squair tubbing with Monkey Pod stufffing and a copper wedge plate. The blade is out of an ols Sargent block plane that was at the bottom of an auction box. Funny story when I went to the scrap yard about a month or so ago looking for brass bar stock for the wedge support all I could find was copper so I ask if it would work most people said yes but Bob said why not use brass and sent a lever cap casting. well the thumb screw needed turning on a lathe that I don't have and I setteled on the copper for this plane. if he would have only turned it first it would be on this plane. it is set op with a verry tight mouth. I heve a new Makers mark on this one It is a connected WM and a 2. My real name is William E. Miller Jr. the WM and the 2 stands for JR. My dad used to mark his tools WM and I thought it was only right to modify it for my mark. for more pictures go to the hand tool board

>I second Ernie's "Ha Ha"! This has been a very fun event. Thank you Ernie! I just received two terrific turning blanks, and attached is a photo of the piece I sent Scott Greaves (somehow he figured out it was me that sent it, go figure!).

>Man That is super! when you make mine could the little guys be holding hand planes? You can make them transitional if they are dancing around a fire. That is nice and I will probably get somthing crapy from Sophie.

>There's only you to blame for the person giving you a gift, since you have the power over the list...no whining!(and thank you for the compliment). I'll see what I can do for the design tip. Did they have planes back then??? Not being a flatworker, I've no appreciation for the planes you all seem to drool over.

Using planes at the lathe...

Bob Hackett

>I generally use hollows and rounds.I`m surprised you folks haven`t figured that out yet.;^)

Mainely,Bob-Who`s still trying to figure how to hook a horse up to his new chariot plane.Soon as I figure it out I`m off to the toga party!

>Dang Bob I though you were a hand tool guy I would have never waisted that on a turner with all of the burls I have rotting in the fire wood pile. At least you can make lathe tools out of the busted chisels.

Bob is right, tho more about me than you. I'm guilty of not getting out and about much lately. Really becoming a real stick in the mud. Been cruising the round side alot more since Jorge almost cheated we nanders out of seeing his small turnings and really realized that I'd become a real homebody. It sure is good to gewt out and see some old friends again.

Don`t get me wrong here!

Bob Hackett

>I`m just as tickled as I can be to see two more of my favorite people here too(you`ll find that this is where Mike Schwing disappeared to after his rash cleared up and Lynn M. is a turner as well as a handplane guru to name just two.You already know about Jorge).

Besides this just means I`ll have twice as much chance to aggravate you both.I know you know I`m smiling when I say that.

Glad to see you both on walkabout.

Nay Nay Bob No Mistake

Todd O. Cronkhite Maine Native in Florida Exile :

>No harm, no foul here. I DID get stuck in my own little world down on The Point and didn't even realize it until Jorge Boo-boo'd.

I tend to be that way sometimes in Reality as well. I'll get caught up in my own little world of flea markets and the shop and not venture out to see other friends for months at a time. I am long overdue now for a visit to my 83 year old friend and fellow woodworker.

>How do I say this Bob? I'm a weak person I get addicted easily. ( don't ask about the 70's) I started by burl pile when I got my lathe 4-5 years ago I would turn every chance I got. It's not real wood working in fact it's not woodworking at all. well maybe segmented is but not turning. I finaly piled crap on and infront of the lathe and just go in for a quick fix every now and then. I have this treddal lathe that is going down in the nander shop for pens and tool handles. I want to do nander demos with it also. I will try and find more time to look a round. Let me take a look in that burl pile and see what there is. The local tree dump is just down the street from work the gate master keeps an eye out for good stuff for me.
