Depends

Phil Joines Krum, Texas

>If you're using it in the headstock it's better to have one that can use a "draw bar", a threaded rod that screws into the chuck mandrel, passes through the spindle and is retained by a nut and washer on the other end. This keeps it from pulling loose if the operation is such that it puts presure tward the tailstock.

>I do. I use it very frequently for sanding odd shaped things after they come off of the lathe. Lately I've been working on a project where I've been using 5 foot long thumb thickness cherry roots and I've used a heavy duty sanding drum in the lathe /drill chuck to assist with that chore.

As was said by another poster, try to put pressure on the tool in the lathe/chuck so that it wants to stay in the taper.

More often though the drill chuck is put in the tailstock for other purposes.

As others have said it works fine in the headstock but may work it's way loose from vibration. I use mine mostly in the tailstock to drill holes. On some mini's you have to crank the tailstock out a little to fit #2 morse tapers with long tangs but they still work fine.

They work really louse you hold work for turning. The convex shaped jaws crush the wood and then things work loose.
