Jet Mini Lathe owners: Does

>your lathe have rough castings especially on the headstock that were painted over? It looks like Jet just crudely ground off ridges on the headstock and didn't smooth them before painting.

So some of the surfaces are smoothly painted while the ridges show through other spots. Just wondering if this is a normal finish for this lathe?

I love this lathe though; it's smooth and quiet which is something I can't say about my larger Delta. Thanks Alan

>Some places are a tad rough, but the only place that bothered me was the tool rest. Had to smooth that off. I think I am going to replace that rest anyway...it's sort of chintzy.

Thanks for your responses

>Fred and Carole. I think this baby is going to be fun to turn on. At least I won't have to wear ear protection like on my Delta lathe. :) Alan in Md.

>Alan, cast iron is generally poured into molds made of a special packed sand and it is the surface of the mold that you see reflected onto the surface of the cast iron. More expensive cast iron is made in better quality molds but it doesn't make the cast iron better, justs costs more. Most treatments to smooth the cast iron also add to the cost and are only done on higher quality items. The Nova cast iron leg set being a case in point. Those things are gorgeous - for cast iron.
