Couple of questions

Carole in VA

>CA glue: I am assuming that is like "Crazy Glue" but am also assuming that I probably should not use drug store variety Crazy Glue on a glue block! What actual brands do you folks use and can I get it at a BORG?

Spur Center: How deeply into the workpiece should the spurs be embedded? Seems like a lot of pressure is needed to crank the tailstock enough to barely embed them (maybe 1/32".)

>Caroll I order my CA glue from Starbond, 800-900-4583 it is also available in most woodturning catalogs. Spur center should be deep enough to grab the wood so it will turn, sometimes you will have to turn the tailstock to tighten especially in soft wood.

>CA glue is CA glue. Crazy Glue is CA glue. Some just costs more than others. There are some differences in properties between the different glues, but probably not enough that you will notice the difference. By the least expensive.

The spur center only has to be engaged enough so it will not spin in the wood. Setting the spurs with the tail center is the worst way to do it. several suggections.

1. Bang the wood into the spur-center with a mallet. Then bring up the tail-center.

2. If the wood is very hard, drill a shallow center hole for the center point, and then bang the wood into the spurs with a hammer.

3. Replace the bent blade in your bandsaw and make 2 shallow cuts at right angles to each other in the ends of the turning blank. The spurs will engage in these slots with very little pressure from the tail-center. Putting the slots in both ends lets you swap ends in the lathe because it is sometimes easier to turn a piece that way.

4. Come to my shop for a 1-day class in spindle turning.

>Carol,

Glen steered you right on the CA Glue. You could use the drug store variety, but is way more expensive. You probably get 20 times more for the same price through woodworking sources.

On the spur center - I assume you are talking about using for spindle work. 1) The Jet Mini is notorious for the tailstock slipping when tightening against wood. I use an 8" section of 3/4" pipe as a cheater bar to snug the tail stock down. 2) Especially with exotics, it is not too hard to crack the wood while trying to force those wedges into the wood. The thing to do, with your bandsaw, or a handsaw, is to cut a 1/8" deep cross (centered on the middle of the spindle) that the spurs can seat into. That way you get the drive you need w/o the chance of splitting the wood.

P.S. I love to watch a new turner get on fire about turning (sometimes frustrating) as we can see is happening to you with your new lathe.

Happy Turning.

>Russ... knowing you, I assume you mean bang the spur center into the wood OFF THE LATHE... the last thing I would do is bang against the bearings in the head stock.

The cross cut at the ends is much better in my opinion. It can be also done with an archaich, and seldom seen these days tool, a handsaw. Mine sits next to the eggbeater drill....

>I have used the cheap tubes of ca from local stores, and haven't had issue with it, but I admit I buy mine online/or/thru local turning club with a great discount of 8 oz. bottles...and the spur drive, out of the lathe, give it a whack with a wooden mallet or dead blow hammer, and it will seat...dennis

>Carole, you've had some good advice so far. I will add that you should square up the face of the piece before you use the spur center. That will assure you that all four points of the spur center are well engaged.

It appears that you're going to try using glue blocks. Good for you. The chuck can come later. I've found that nearly always if a joint on a glue block fails it was because not enough glue was used. Put lots on, hit it with only one or two spritz's of accelerator, wait 30 seconds, put the block on, then apply only hand pressure for a few seconds.

>I would think my little gent's saw would be perfect for cutting the kerfs, and no...I don't think I would give the piece a rap while the spur center is mounted. :-)

Sorry about all the questions foks, but you are my only "live" resource since the only turners around here are far too busy to fool with a newbie. Really enjoyed Bill's video and it fired me up, but I am afraid it is far ahead of me right now and assumes one knows all the basic stuff. So much to learn....

>Thanks Wally. Since I don't have access to CA in anything but tiny tubes, can I use Yellow glue (cured overnight) or Gorila glue?

>Sure, Yellow glue works fine. I use CA because after gluing I can immediately put the piece back on the lathe. CA works well with wet wood...I'm not sure about yellow glue.

>Instead of.. Put lots on, hit it with only one or two spritz's of accelerator, wait 30 seconds, put the block on, then apply only hand pressure for a few seconds.

It should have read, put lots of glue on, wait 30 seconds, hit it with accelerator, then immediately put the block on.
