l-o-n-g hose clamp

>Anyone know of a good source for hose clamps of up to 40 inches circumference ? I'm experimenting with segmented forms turned on a lathe . Whenever I ask all I get are stares of disbelief ! Lowes, NAPA, Home Depot, Auto Zone have been scratched off . Thanks for any input . Bill

>Just get a piece of tin flashing or something like that, cut off a narrow strip that is a bout the right length and then pop rivit a hose clamp to each end of it. That is a lot cheaper than buying a whole bunch of hose clamps and it works good. I used this kind of setup to patch some large metal tubes and it works good. Jared

Making long hose clamps 101.

Dave Smith, Longview, WA

>Hi Bill,

Get a fairly long hose clamp, 3" to 4". You want one that has a portion unslotted. Cut the band leaving about 1" of solid band on each piece. Use some banding material that is the same width. Drill 2 hole for pop rivets. Attach the ends of the hose clamp to each end of the desired length banding material. Now you can make any length clamp you want.

Don't use the brittle strapping that is commonly used on pallets. Being a pack rat I used the banding material my neighbor was going to throw away from a TV antenna installation kit. Take a little time and trim the sharp corners off the ends of the bands. I nip the corners off and file them smooth. Sounds like you will be using the clamps often so you might want to use heat shrink tubing over the splices to minimize catching. Heat shrink should available in the electrical section of the hardware store.

Well there goes an other tip I never got around to sending to a magazine.

>Bill:

Contact a local commercial HVAC contractor - the big air-duct heating & cooling guys. They often use worm-screw type stainless band clamps to attach flexible ducting to plenums and other air ducting, and could possibly suggest a local source, or might sell them to you directly. I managed to get a few of the "old" ones being replaced by some contractors working in modifying an HVAC system in my building at the University - they were re-attaching 16" flex ducts and wanted to use new ones, so the clamps I got for free would be perfect for 14-16" segment rings..... Some of the shorter clamps can be attached together to achieve greater length, but I agree it's a pain to try to work with several smaller "ganged" clamps.

Good luck, tight joints, and pretty wood!

>Hi Bill,

When I was a boy (long time ago) the hose clamps on cars were made from strap metal the ends bend at 90 degrees and had a stove bold trough, I have made all kinds of them, an improvement was to have the 90 degree on one end double and then have some extra that would slide under the other side, I use pallet strapping now if I have to make a long clamp, it is a little hard some times but it works for me, and the price is wright.

>Several shorter clamps strung together are better than one long clamp with only one tightener. Having 2 or 3 tighteners spaced around the ring gives a better distribution of clamping forces than trying to pull everything in from one point..

>Hi Russ

I am not a segmented bowl turner, but I can see the problem with having the clamp having to slip around when tightening and in so doing not having equal pressure all around, of course one can make several pieces that are hooked up together and, tightened at more places, and having several different lengths, one can than make smaller and longer clamps, experience in doing things does make the problems one runs into obvious, and we're never to old to learn, I hope. thanks.

I'm having a senior moment. I bought an adjustable length clamp from one of the major chains that sells nothing but nuts, bolts, screws etc. It was 48". I'll probably remember the name of the place before I hit the sack tonight but sure can't right. now.

>Make your own. Several years ago we had the same need. A realy large hose clamp. Couldn't find one. So we made our own. You can buy stainless steel banding any length the same size as the band on the hose clamp. Just weld it to a hose clamp.

Hope this helps.

>If you need a lot of variable large clamps, try page 217 of McMaster-Carr catalog. For a price of $52 to $82 you can get a kit of 100 feet of bulk clamp material and the hardware to make screw clamps. You can then make any size you need. We use this kit at work and it is very useful.

Any of the large comercial plumbing supply places should have large bands. They are used on hard pipe repairs.

>Be prepared to pay dollars for large diameter (new) gear type stainless hose clamps, they certainly are not cheap. My advise is to find a truck salvage yard or a business that sell used truck parts (highway tractors). Many of the air cleaners for the engines on older units used large diameter (12 inches) gear type hose clamps, I have several here. Not the clamps for the hoses or ducting but the ones that were used on the air cleaners themselves. Iam thinking about some of the old Mack or International highway tractors that used oil bath air cleaners that were mounted on the cowling at the rear of either front fender. Hope this helps, good luck

Tractor parts for hose clamps

Jim McTavish

>I think your best bet is to go to a tractor parts dealer. I know Case and New Holland 4WD tractors use large (up to 10" diameter) worm screw hose clamps for their air intake systems. Well, the large (400 hp and over) tractors use clamps this big... And they are very heavy duty.

Just be sure to stay away from John Deere (they don't give me my paycheck every 2 weeks!)....
