Pen From Cocobolo

>I've never used Cocobolo, but remember seeing in some posts that it can be hard to glue because of oils?

I am only making a pen, will the regular CA glue that I use work ok, or do I need to do something special?

>Regular super glue works fine, especially if you wipe off the wood with denatured alcohol or lacquer thinner just prior to glue application. One warning--use a mask and protect your skin. Cocobolo is one of the most allergy producing of the rosewood family, and exposure to it is cumulative. Everything may be fine for several years, then suddenly you may have a significant reaction. If you protect yourself from the beginning, perhaps you will have a longer career of turning Cocobolo. DAMHIKT!!

Putting a CA finish on Coc bolo that's another story.

>I use 5 minute epoxy for all my pen kits... I usually drill, glue and trim all my blanks one day and then turn the next (I usually do lots of 20 pens at a time).. if I am only doing one offs the epoxy is also great..

As for CA finish on cocobolo, just wipe down the blank with lacquer thinner first to remove some of the natural oils and apply the CA with a Bounty or Viva paper towel... for some reason the paper towels make the CA set up a lot quicker.. have never had the finish crack or peel when done this way... and I have done about 50 cocobolo pens this year... they sell real well.. they look especially nice with bright chrome fittings if the wood is real dark.. on the more orange colored wood, gold it nice..

I also sometimes use a custommade gabon ebony centerband in place of the standard one on slimlines..
